So what’s happened to the “the cards won’t work” reason/excude? :face_with_monocle:

I can only read the first paragraph (because paywall) but it says:

Maybe it took so long because they wanted them to update their systems rather than wastefully replace millions of cards :person_shrugging:

Or they’ve been slowly replacing the cards over the last three years :eyes:

Apparently it’s never been about the cards (ex monzo here), it’s just no agreement.

I can think of a couple of related reasons, although pure speculation on my part

  • the fee post office charge monzo
  • fees for related services like cash withdrawal (maybe post office insist on both services ?)
  • how the fee is charged to the end user. Most consumer bank accounts didn’t charge for post office transactions, they maybe worried about confusion when someone deposits £10 gets a receipt for £10 but only £9 is deposited

I’m not sure which post you’re referring to, but some assume it’s because the cards aren’t compatible with post office and that’s not the case, the agreement isn’t there to allow post office to transact with the bank.

Post Office will be great when it’s there, I use Starling or Lloyds to deposit cash, or to withdraw for my hair cut every few weeks.

I seem to remember a post by a Monzoer back in the early days, either prepaid or the first generation of current account cards saying there was something missing in the progressing of the chip. It was a long time ago so could be completely unrelated :hushed:

Could’ve been prepaid card times,

Fairs, I just remember the internal talks saying it was never the actual cards.

If it’s this, I wonder how close they get to 100% before they go for it. You just know the 3% remaining cards will be the people that want to use this feature.

A good friend of mine is an SME owner and takes his fair share of cash. I got him onto Monzo a while ago and he love’s it. Especially being able to send payment links so easily which also saves him merchant fees. Anyway his only frustration is not being able to deposit cash at the PO directly opposite his business. I sent him this link this morning and he is super excited. My only concern is that this is the only mention of it that I have been able to find. Even Monzo don’t seem to be announcing anything. I’m hoping that I haven’t given him/anyone else false hope.

Monzo did announce it by their CFO I think it was? A few month back in a Q&A.

It’ll be a while off, but at least it’s inbound.

Worth bearing in mind they haven’t published limits yet, it may not be a good option for large amounts of cash.

I think Monzo are only announcing quite late on, avoids negative publicity if there are any delays

Probably this:

Either Monzo did that and have been prepping for years or I wonder if there could have been an update PO side?

That’s the one! Glad I’m not going mad
