Hmm that is curious. I wonder if that’s laying the framework for proper joint account integration soon?
But still seems not accurate at present regardless of how you slice it.

The fact that joint accounts were ignored is frustrating. Very MVP approach which didn’t work with the previous Plus approach.
Hopefully someone from Monzo can confirm a timeline, otherwise I will be cancelling plus. Very happy with the plus offering, but only if it works for our joint account.
It would be interesting to know how many joint accounts are in use at Monzo, although prob sensitive information.
Yes we use our joint account for pretty much everything so if custom categories don’t work there then it’s not very useful to me
Well this is pretty typical of the Monzo approach to joint accounts.
No overdraft, no Plus. Why? Second class Monzo citizens again.
I guess there must be some technical reason, perhaps around the account / user relationship, otherwise surely there would always be parity.
But it is disappointing that those who only want joint accounts are always behind the feature set for personal accounts, even more so when additional new features then come out for personal accounts before joint accounts catch up.
This feels more about priorities and perhaps reflects that joint account, and sole joint account in particular, users are in a pretty small minority?
It would be great to really know where joint accounts figure overall moving forward and perhaps also understand how small the joint account count pool is.
Anyway I am still hoping that @tomdavies can get back to us with the plans for Plus for joint accounts soon.
You don’t have to keep tagging him, he isn’t going to give you the answer you want.
Thanks for that @Revels
I wonder how much it will be for a joint account with plus? It would be good if it could be done on a per account basis as I would use all the features whereas my wife would use none of them whatsoever. I’d be loathed to pay for a second user that I know will never use the features.
My wife and I do all our spending from our joint account. We never use our personal accounts. All we want are custom categories. This is disappointing that it’s not supported.
Since custom categories is part of Monzo Plus, which is Monzos paid for premium account - you’d be best advocating for Plus to be available for joint accounts rather than custom categories
Hi @Topogram & welcome
As @Ordog rightly points out, advocating Plus for Joint Accounts would be the best way to push for this. I’ve commented on multiple topics about Plus for JA’s and despite these comments, I couldn’t find a way to vote for the support of Monzo Plus (2020) to be available on Joint Accounts. So I created a feedback topic to vote for it here:
Agreed, I will be cancelling my plus subscription because its of no use to me unless its available on the joint account.
I wonder if there is some technical difficulties in separating out the Open Banking aspects of Plus for joint accounts which is delaying this?
I suspect a data structure issue, caused by a Joint account really being a Personal account but giving access to two users, while each of those users also have a Personal account.
Personal accounts have only one user. Business accounts were designed with multiple users in mind.
The accelerated launch of Joint accounts in Sep-2018 was based on them being essentially Personal accounts but with 2 existing users linked to them (aka: why do you need a Personal account to have a Joint Account when the Joint Account is an entirely separate bank account?). Joint accounts have never had overdrafts, monzo.me, IFTTT or Plus v1,2,3… features - which leads me to believe the multiple users tied to what is basically a Personal account, while also each having access to an actual Personal account has introduced technical limits.
Moving the Joint account away from each user needing to have a Personal account first - making it a totally independent account (from a user access angle) would probably fix most of the issues, but this could be a very complex move in itself. Especially for existing Joint account users.
Starling has the same user structure I believe - you need to both have Personal accounts to then open a Joint account. But Starling doesn’t have ‘starling.me’, IFTTT integration or Plus - so no-one has seen any similar issues with a Starling account. And it doesn’t look like Starling JA’s offer overdrafts either, so there seems to be a similar user/account(s) structure issue with Starling JA’s too.
I came here to say exactly this!
I honestly don’t care how Monzo fix this but they need to pull their finger out.
We would be more than happy to subscribe to Plus for the joint account/ my partner’s account/ both if it meant we could access custom categories. It would mean more revenue for Monzo however this isn’t currently an option
I’m lazy enough not to have cancelled my Plus subscription yet but unless they provide this ever so basic functionality soon I will end up doing so. Crazy to finally find a way to monetise the product then stick two fingers up to your paying customers.
It’s totally understandable why Plus was launched for current accounts first and not joint accounts. If you’re interested in the details why, be sure to have a search
You’ll also be pleased to hear that since returning from their Christmas break they’re starting work on Plus for joint accounts too
Which, I believe, is what they are doing.
I suspect that the delay is caused in part by the way Monzo accounts are structured. With Monzo, a joint account is already an add on. Most banks don’t require joint account holders to already have a personal account. So adding Plus to a joint account is adding an add on to an add on.
I dare say it will arrive as soon as all the issues are resolved.
Then the arguments will start over pricing.
That may be understandable - what isn’t is the apparent lack of foresight in how the accounts are structured. This isn’t exactly groundbreaking tech.
I never said it was groundbreaking and if you believe it to be “lack of foresight” then I assume you haven’t read or understood the reasoning.
Anyway, don’t shoot the messenger. I was just saying that what you’re asking for has recently had an update - which is a good thing
