Contactless over £30

That wouldn’t be falling back in any sense of the word. Most cards including Monzo prefer online PIN for contactless. If the terminal supports online PIN contactless should work fine for any amount.

Oh, so it’s a misconfigured terminal then. Makes sense. Thanks!

Not misconfigured generally, as I don’t believe network standards require online PIN to be configured in the UK. Just not configured.

This is still a misconfiguration in my book - any feature that would improve user experience should be turned on, whether mandatory or not.

Fair  I somewhat agree in principle but would you then say every US terminal with contactless disabled entirely is misconfigured?

I wish all systems were like Aldi.
It clearly says on the terminal “ contactless up to £30 or Unlimited with ApplePay” it would be so much easier

Well you’re talking about a place where even contacted EMV is often disabled, so of course it’s misconfigured. :joy:

It won’t freeze your account, the worst thing that could happen is it asks you to pay by chip and pin instead. Just give it a whirl

I love doing this and it usually amazes most of the people taking the payment as they never knew it worked.

Not totally true. The worst that could happen is it could run as signature but the self checkout attendant not knowing what to do treats it as a frozen self checkout and reboots, getting semi-angry at you in the process… I know from experience!

Out of curiosity, do you have a list of UK retailers that you know support Mastercard online PIN?

At least you can just smile and pretend you didn’t just nearly “ break “ something

I don’t… but next time I do it I’ll make a note :memo:. I’ve mostly only done it by a accident when I expected the bill to be just under £30 but it was over by a few £.

does this mean you could raise the limit if you say finger print verification on the phone within 60 seconds before tapping on the terminal or something along those lines?

is that what apple pay does? never used it

Hi Neilh,

The limit is technically a CVM (cardholder verification method) waiver, not an absolute limit. If a mutually agreed CVM can be processed, there’s no hard limit per se.

One of those CVMs is CDCVM (Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method) - this means that a trusted device verified you. Exactly what Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc do.

Another one of those CVMs is online PIN (PIN that is verified by the bank, not the card itself like the more widely supported offline PIN).

Finally, signature can be possible, but shops are likely to block this as if the card prefers PIN (even online PIN) they’re liable for lost/stolen card fraud if signature is used. Banks may also decline this, and there is a specific reason code to decline this but prompt an insert instead of giving a declined message.

P.S. technically I think the ‘withdrawal limit exceeded’ reason code could be used to force an insert on an online PIN or a CDCVM transaction also, but I can’t imagine why the bank would want to. Also, there’s the final category of no CVM but I can’t imagine that ever being hit in an attended environment - I think it’s more for the likes of vending machines, which would typically be under £30 anyway.

P.P.S. I just remembered one bank has a £100 limit for CDCVM transactions with their Android app… so they would do that. Their CDCVM implementation is on-device PIN entry also…

Barclays?

Yup

The thing is, Apple Pay has a feature that allows loyalty cards to be automatically transmitted when Apple Pay is used as a payment method. I don’t think any UK company uses it - I know Walgreens in the US does.

Tesco already have contactless clubcards, and you can add your clubcard to Apple Pay, so I doubt it’d be much effort for them to have this implemented (although they may have to run a custom firmware on their card readers, if they support it at all…), but they really want people to use their app…

I hate Barclaycard mobile with a vengeance. I use it because I’ve run out of money in my Monzo account, but it’s a horrid experience, that requires a persistent notification icon (which I’ve disabled), and even then the bloody page showing a payment has been sent doesn’t show up 4/5 of the time - the payment is just sent to the reader with nothing showing on the phone (I have a feeling the foreground UI for payments requires some sort of background service which Android keeps on killing because I’ve got the icon forced to be hidden).

Oh, and it doesn’t support fingerprints at all, and you have to use the bundled IME which isn’t a nice experience either.

Oh, and another thing, Barclays send you a real letter every time you register on the app. As someone that regularly erases my phone, this gets annoying very quickly.

Very possible we’ll see it come to the UK from rumours I’ve heard on other forums.

I’m in Israel at the moment and just used monzo for a ~£10 transaction at McDonald’s and used contactless - it asked for my signature on the tiny screen. I found it odd as the same machine had a pin pad but it still asked for my squiggle. This was using the self service machines and no one checked my random squiggle against the card.

The transaction hasn’t appeared in my feed yet so it seems it was an offline contactless + signature offline transaction

Can confirm Asda do not accept contactless/apple pay over £30 in the self checkout or the normal checkout.
I asked the lady at the normal checkout if i could pay via apple pay for the shopping ( £50 ) and she said give it a go, put my phone to the machine and nothing happened, it just said " Please Insert Card " and had to pay via chip and pin.

At least we know now, Asda definitely do not accept over £30 at this moment
Thanks
