Sad to see @jwhiterz drop his CC role! All the best for whatever you’re off to do now!
I’m also surprised and disappointed to see that the coral crew code of conduct has been deleted. Surely this a key piece of the community to help everyone understand the remit/boundaries of the coral crew and ensure they are appropriately protected and supported
Yep, I decided to use the opportunity of the forum being closed to drop out of the CC.
I’ve not been very active here over the last few months mostly because I don’t have the time.
The forum has been rocky lately and so I hope that the last few days is a true reset and can bring some life/spark back with less trolling and confrontation .
I’ll still be around just as a regular member from time to time.
I haven’t logged in for a couple of weeks (or at least didn’t notice it was in read-only). What actually happened to result in the forum being closed? Can anyone give a synopsis?
To be fair I think it depends on what people consider “bad trolling”. Like you, I was on throughout watching it all unfold and I can’t honestly say I saw anything that I would consider bad trolling at all, but then maybe I just have a thicker skin and decades hanging around some dark corners of Internet forums.
Personally I’m more inclined to agree with the OP that it was more a case of ‘it’s the weekend, we can’t be bothered to sort this out’ than some earth shattering, traumatising, deeply scarring level of bad trolling requiring dramatic action. More than anything it seemed to be the combination of the horrendous, tone deaf, control freakish response to a mildly critical blog post being posted which seemed to upset some forum regulars, and a separate amount of bog standard trolling, which when combined felt like something more dramatic was happening than really was. But that’s just my take obviously, I appreciate some may see it differently.
Just running through some of the great questions from yesterday.
Regarding username changes, this feature has been removed and the only way that you’ll be able to change your name is by messaging a Monzo staff member.
We understand that sometimes there’s a genuine reason to want a name change, we all remember the very unusual email address we created when we were young
Would it be possible (if you haven’t already) to change the flagging system?
I’ve yet to see it work effectively.
IME, as soon as flags start appearing, we end up with counter flags, we end up with people rephrasing/reposting the same material, and we end up with locked threads. Which is to say that threads are totally destroyed, and everything that was meant to be hidden is still visible.
As a starting point, I’d suggest not auto hiding flagged posts. a) they’re not really hidden because you can still see them and b) it winds people up and inflames the situation.
The thing is, people have been asking for this on and off virtually since the forum opened, and all I’ve ever seen is the impression from Monzo that they’re happy with it and how it’s working. Minor tweaks are made now and again, like taking the default number of flags to hide a comment from 3 to a few more, but that seems to make little difference in the grand scheme of things as people who are interested can easily find ways to circumnavigate it. It seems very much that because there are some limitations within Discourse, anything other than minor tweaks are not generally considered, especially as, as I said, from my POV the powers that be dont seem to see a real issue to begin with. But that is just the impression I get.
A bit more time is maybe a little bit of an understatement, I’ll be dedicating a lot more of my time focusing on the Community and it’s well-being.
The 9 days weren’t spent with us hiding from the problems that currently exist on the Community. Frank discussions took place and we looked in to what would be best for everyone moving forward as well as allowing the Community itself to take a breather from what had happened.
Regarding where we go from here to improve the overall health/sanity of the Community, we’re working on a piece to help tap into the huge wealth of knowledge that exists within the Community. More to follow very soon.
