Collected Thoughts on Card Design (Part 2)

Probably the fact that Unionpay isn’t very accepted around the UK.

I have successfully used UnionPay in the past at Five Guys and Harvey Nichols. Most other shop, even if they display the logo, aren’t actually set up to accept it.

Jumped into the waggon and applied for the Marriott debit card. Have very little use for it other than when I occasionally stay at a Marriott. There’s a new Moxy in Dublin that is actually very handy and see myself staying there often. Will try and do the welcome challenge of £3000 in 12 months.

It also got me over the line for Platinum. So in 2026 I’ll stay in more Marriotts than other brands.

Quite like the card, nice colour too.

Be careful putting in another bank for backup though - I did this and they completely froze my account and apparently my Santander bank account flagged up and they wouldn’t allow me to use their card unless I removed Santander. Very weird.

I wish the transactions looked better in your bank though - they are awful and Monzo flags them as a direct debit because that’s how the funds are taken.

Huh interesting. I may do a small test and see how it goes. I linked it to my HSBC account.

My Monzo one when set up was fine.

As soon as I put a back up one they froze it. Then customer support came back with a “We cannot say why we refuse a customer an account” which I had to go back and forth with to convince them I have an account it’s just frozen due to them not liking the Santander account.

Deleted Santander and they unfroze it.

They do, even as an existing customer you get another one for additional accounts.

A Disney card with a suitcase motif will be issued by the Japanese issuer Life Card. Suitcases are a popular motif for travel cards around the world.

Although I’ve noticed that Disney designs seem to only ever come with the JCB network… wonder why?

Because JCB headquarters was a major sponsor of Tokyo Disneyland, I believe JCB still has exclusive rights to use international branded cards in Japan. It seems that JCB also shares the rights to use Disney characters with small and medium-sized card issuers. So, while VISA and Mastercard have simple designs in Japan, JCB is often the only card with a Mickey Mouse design.

Saw this on Linkedin. Seems that Metro has some new physical card designs on the way.

Somehow they remind me of previous NatWest design

Would love to get my hands on the Black one but after speaking to Metro that isn’t gonna be possible for a long long time.

After some issues finalising the account opening (they won’t notify you if you need to give them more information!), the card is finally here. Card ordered on 24th, shipped on 27th and arrived today. All the way from the middle of nowhere in the US.

Arrived quicker than some Christmas cards posted with Royal Mail

Is that card linked direct to your brokerage account with Schwab?
