Co-op bank ATM troubles

Agree totally. I never used them when in a big town as they were pricier than Waitrose. However I now live in a small town and it is the only supermarket in my town and the only one in the next towns to the north and the south of me :frowning:

Yeah I reported to Monzo’s specialist current account team. They were not aware of this issue and said they would visit on their lunch to check out what’s going on with that ATM. The co op bank atm didn’t say “we don’t accept MasterCard”, just spat it out with error “card not recognised”, so don’t think I was nuts to report it.

Does anyone have a link for co op bank stating they don’t accept MasterCard and the reason why, or are we just assuming that’s the issue?

I didn’t say you were nuts, it’s not something people would generally think of.

The MasterCard ATM locator which I linked above doesn’t have Co-Op Bank ATMs, so that’s source one.

Source two is the error on the ATM itself. ‘Card not recognised’ generally means it didn’t find an AID match. Thus, didn’t accept the MasterCard AID.

With this said, is there a reason multiple people have expected these ATMs to take MasterCard other than the general assumption that ‘I have a card, that’s an ATM, I bet it’ll work’? Which, again, is a valid assumption in the UK most of the time? But what I mean is - did Co-Op ever hint they do take MasterCard (e.g. by using the MasterCard logo anywhere on the ATM)? If so, report them to MasterCard.

In the past the co-op group provided bank facilities and late opening stores where others have pulled out due to economies. Monzo/Revolut provide exactly how many ATMs for their customers?

Go on their community and post this…if they have one

My Monzo current account works at the Coop cash machine on Balloon Street.

It doesn’t work on those standalone ones inside the Arndale though.

Can you compare those locations to the MasterCard locator?

They do not appear on MasterCard’s ATM locator.

That branch is directly east of the National Football Museum (across the road on Corporation Street) on the map and there are no ATMs listed at the location (on the MasterCard ATM locator). The LINK website do list them as Co-op Bank ATMs.

Sorry I lose track. Were these ones that worked or didn’t? I’m trying to figure out how complete the MasterCard data is to show all working ones.

There are 2 Cooperative Bank ATMs on the 1 Balloon Street Coop Bank building (confusingly the ATM’s are actually on the Corporation Street side of the building). These are listed on LINKs website as Cooperative Bank ATMs. They do not appear on MasterCards ATM locator. These are the ATMs @anon88643288 stated he used with his Monzo card.

That’s correct. I’ll try them again in a few days (I was drunk when I used them sooooo :tipping_hand_man:t2:).

I’ll report back with my findings and locations!

The mystery continues, then.

My understanding of the problem is this.
Co-op Group (not Cooperative Bank) owned a cash handing business up to 2 or 3 years ago which provided the servicing of ATMs at stores owned by Co-op Group and many regional societies. The business was sold and the new owners dropped Co-operative Bank ATMs and went with another supplier. So…
Most co-op shops should now have another supplier’s ATMs that accept MasterCard, but the ATMs at Co-operative BANK branches (and one or two other places, especially in Manchester) still have the Bank ATMs that accept only Visa and Link.

PayPoint cash machines don’t accept MasterCard either, only link. They even tell you that your card doesn’t support LINK when they spit it back at you.

Its the same with Cumberland building society ATMs :frowning:
