As many will know, free to use ATMs are kind of rare in the USA; you’ll normally be charged a few dollars surcharge unless you’re a customer of the bank network that operates the cash machine you’re using.
I’ve found out through Twitter that Chase UK customers can use the Chase US ATM network with no ATM operator fees, avoiding the $3 fee they charge non-Chase customers! Nice to see some collaboration between the UK and US divisions to offer us benefits.
This makes opening a Chase account definitely worth it for regular travellers to the US.
Given that Chase is such a large US bank, and that Chase UK charges no fees on their end for international ATM use, this is a very useful and totally fee-free option for withdrawing cash.
Well done for finding it out!
If I were them, I would be advertising this benefit on their website.
Credit to a chap called Colin, who managed to get the answer to me before the official Chase Twitter account! (I do find their Twitter support significantly slower than the high street banks I’ve had to pester on there before, which is interesting considering how little demand there must be on CS at the moment… I guess they’re really prioritising in-app chat, which I’m certainly not complaining about!)
Very easy to close, transfer any remaining balance into another account, and then click close account from the account menu, it will ask if you are sure and that it is irreversible. You can of course open another new account but each time you do you will get a unique account number.
As I understand there is a 20 active accounts limit, so closed accounts would not count towards that limit, but not 100% sure on that.
Sign up experience very good, but mixed feelings about customer service - pretty sure they didn’t read what I messaged them properly and when I followed up to clarify they went off on a second tangent
Thankfully nothing major, just wondering if it was too late to change the name pattern on the card (see below), but not super comforting
