I remember this happening with Monzo and Tesco.
Customers were so confused when the funds were debit a second time, after a false reversal/refund.
Then got pissy saying monzo stole their money
Haha, good point. Will be interesting to see how things pan out.
I spent nearly £330 on my Chase CC yesterday and they haven’t reversed my transaction yet.
Should I file a complaint as I feel discrimnated against?
A bit scathing over on Reddit
Returning to the ‘Is Chase still worth it?’ discussion. Some posters responded ‘Yes, but only because of the cashback’. It occurs to me that even that is not so great, because you do still have to deposit £1500 per month (even if only temporarily) to qualify, and even then the cashback value is capped.
As per usual, it would appear that the account model is set up to be a loss leader, to attract customers, then gradually reduce returns and benefits, and rely on inertia in the hope that customers can not be bothered to leave.
I think the idea of having spending accounts on a seperate screen to savings accounts is a great idea and really helps cut down on the clutter. The app is very well laid out imo.
I’m just not enthused by the offering Chase has, I’m just keeping my account now because I don’t want to get locked out if they end up doing something I find interesting
Their implementation is so useless to me though
If I want to spend from the other accounts I need to change the option in the app each time.
In order to be useful to me I’d need virtual cards for these accounts at minimum
A fair point, and there are definitely some good aspects of the experience, not least of which is the relative immediacy of transactions.
Also, I suppose there is a subtle difference between shipping out entirely, vs ‘maintaining some sort of presence’, just in case.
Had two emails from Chase, one with wording for debit card and the other for credit card. The crux of the email:
We’re working to fix this as soon as possible and then we will reclaim this money. At that point the amount you owe on your credit card will increase
You do not need to make this purchase again - the transaction will have been processed as normal for the merchant
We’ll let you know when this payment has been reclaimed - you will also be able to see this in your ‘All Activity’
Is there any logic/theory/rumour as to who/where/what went wrong?
Did someone have a pending hold they wanted reversed and some helpful CS rep did it for all customers?
More than likely an automated deployment that was somehow triggered by mistake. Not the first time and won’t be the last.
Still, could be worse.
Email from Chase yesterday…
An update on your unexpected refund
Unfortunately, we had a problem with one of our systems between 3pm and 4pm on Tuesday 7 January. It means that some card transactions were incorrectly refunded on our side during this time, and we believe you have received at least one of these. We’d like to reassure you that you do not need to make the transaction again, as it will have gone through for the merchant. We’re working to fix this, and the money will leave your account when we have done so.
What happened
You had a pending debit card transaction that should have processed yesterday as a debit on your account - this might have been a purchase, an ATM withdrawal or a recurring card payment
This was instead processed as a separate reversal into your account between 3pm and 4pm, meaning you ended up with a higher balance
The transaction was processed properly for the merchant, so any purchases were made as normal
What happens next
We’re working to fix this as soon as possible and then we will reclaim this money - please make sure there’s enough in your account to cover this
You do not need to make this purchase again - the transaction will have been processed as normal for the merchant
We’ll let you know when this payment has been reclaimed - you will also be able to see this in your ‘All Activity’
If you have any issues as a result of this, please get in touch via ‘Support’ in the app
Not sure what transactions are affected?
Affected transactions will show in your ‘All Activity’ feed as a + amount received between 3pm and 4pm yesterday. If you tap on the transaction, it will say ‘Reversal’ at the top.
We know you count on your bank for the important things in life. We’re working as fast as we can to fix the problem and will update you as soon as we know more.
Thank you
The Chase team
It’s a bit poor this, isn’t it? I’m no spring chicken, and I’ve never experienced anything like this before in the banking sector, especially with such a big player. Doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence - does nothing run properly these days? I have enough plates to keep spinning, without another one <whine, moan>
I managed to avoid this debacle somehow
I had 2 transactions refunded, both under £5 so minor really. Most annoying aspect for me is that Monzo is now only picking up the balance from my Chase account, no new transaction info. And it’s been nearly 2 days now. A little bit surprised it’s not been addressed yet.
That’ll teach them to not let me back.
