Off topic: Personally I tend to always write it with a lowercase g as I’m an atheist, so I see the word as a reference to a philosophical idea as opposed to an entity.

I respect others for who they are as a person so I will use whatever pronoun they self-identify with, but I don’t tend to budge on my personal beliefs to accommodate other peoples’ feelings.

Sorry, that is why i was careful to add the word “always”. Now it is indeed often still done. It is sometimes used as no specific deity. Just as “deity” is not capitalized.

In my mind, one is not a person and doesn’t have an identity or persona, just an idea. Tom, Geoff and Jill are peoples names and they do exist, although I personally don’t know anyone by those names, they do exist as people somewhere in the world.

While I respect your right to hold these opinions, personally I would be upset to have my God referred to as “god” as much as I would be to have a husband or wife referred to by the wrong pronoun. It is insulting as it is perceived as intentionally derogatory. Anyhow, I wish you peace and happiness and will not discuss it further here.

Also it’s God if you’re referring to anything of faith whether you believe in it or not, in my opinion. It’s disrespectful unless you are talking about gods. Same with Mohammed and Vishnu and Buddha etc.

I always thought it was a simple as names are capatilised and God is a name. Wether you believe or not it’s still a name.

We do. It’s the singular they. First used over 600 years ago, and all the great writers have used it - Shakespeare, Chaucer, Austen - so it absolutely has the weight of history and precedence behind it too.

I’m really trying understand the other side of the debate here and trying to avoid offending anyone as much as possible.

I would reference any god by their name, but the word “God(s)” in the middle of a sentence is as grammatically incorrect to me as “Dog(s)” and “Car(s)”.

I’ll just reference an article I found - God or god? to Capitalize or Not to Capitalize

The reason is that in such cases we are talking about members of a general class or category - specifically, members of a group which gets the label ‘gods’ because people have, at one time or another, worshipped its members as gods. Anytime we are referring to the fact that some being or alleged being is a member of this class, it is grammatically appropriate to use a lowercase ‘g’ but inappropriate to use an uppercase ‘G’ - just as it would be inappropriate to write about Apples or Cats.

The same holds true if we are writing very generally about Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or Sikh beliefs. It is appropriate to say that Christians believe in a god, that Jews believe in a single god, that Muslims pray every Friday to their god, and that Sikhs worship their god. There is absolutely no reason, grammatical or otherwise, to capitalize ‘god’ in any of those sentences.

Confusion is caused by the fact that Christians don’t typically ascribe a personal name to their god - some use Yahweh or Jehovah, but that is pretty rare. The name they use happens to be the same as the general term for the class that being belongs to. It’s not unlike a person who has named their cat, Cat. In such a situation, there could be some confusion at times as to when the word should be capitalized and when it shouldn’t. The rules themselves may be clear, but their application might not be.

Christians are accustomed to using God because they always reference it in a personal manner - they say that “God has spoken to me,” not that “my god has spoken to me.” Thus, they and other monotheists might be taken aback at finding people who don’t privilege their particular god concept and so reference it in a general manner, just as they do with everyone else’s god.

I’m a Christian and not too fussed what anyone wants to call my god but just with the English language rules the Christian god would be God with it being a name.

I think Monzos approach of no pronouns is the best option or just a drop down and whatever anyone would like to use. Like Me, Ms or Miss or MX etc.

I thought I was quite liberal but I hadn’t heard of Mx until reading about it on here. Sounds like a great idea to make things feel more inclusive to everyone. And it’ll piss some right wingers off too.
