Bad press for Monzo

This is a good example of why sometimes having a degree doesn’t mean you have a clue. There’s no substitute for common sense…ever…

Maybe Monzo could send like a verification notification to your app? To prove that they at least have access to the systems, so are probably on the level

I think the main thing here is Joe Public don’t realise how easy it is to spoof a phone number, or SMS message, really a trivial thing nowadays - This fact needs to be spread around more often because I’m sure these scams go beyond someone pretending to be your bank

This is the kind of scam you’d more associate with older customers who are terrified that they’ll lose their money to fraud (ironically), but less so with youngsters. Not blaming him, because the whole purpose of these types of scams is to reassure you that they are legit to gain your trust to do stuff - you look back and you can’t believe you fell for their patter but we’re all human!

What I am surprised by though is that being asked to give your email password, and allowing someone to transfer your money out of your account while you’re literally watching didn’t cause the guy concern at the time to contact Monzo directly back afterwards to verify. I know scammers are reassuring, but I wouldn’t give my password to the other half let alone anyone else (nor my PIN). So many flags in that report. A lesson for everyone.

I wouldn’t comment on this personally. More needs to be done to raise awareness regarding security.

Monzo refunded him the money so he is no worse off. I recently raised a claim for a transaction with MasterCard and it can take up to 3 months and I don’t mind the wait.

However I was not in this persons shoes so I don’t want to say much more about it to be honest

He’s not out of pocket but Monzo and HSBC are and consequently so are their customers.

How did they get hold of his HSBC details?

I found that curious too from the article.

As far as I know HSBC logins have a user name, so there must’ve been some extra detail gathering.

Sounds like a lot of stirring from the Sun here too. “The bank only refund after we got in touch to complain” - it’s gone from Scam, investigation, refund, article posting in a week. Doesn’t seem that horrendous that it would take a few days to resolve this.

He probably gave that account away too.

I mean seriously, what were the chances that two accounts of his at two separate banks were vulnerable to fraud? That didn’t go through his head at all?

I’m guessing The Sun left a lot of details out

The Sun. Well, that’s all I need to know. :man_shrugging:

A bank will never call you, you call them, also don’t give any passwords over the phone? Simple lmao.

Monzo will and do call customers, but only if it’s been pre-arranged in the app.

But yeah don’t give out any passwords.

Having mulled, I wonder if we’re seeing a fresh set of people who are naively unaware of how scams like these operate. Those of us who are *cough* not as youthful *cough* have had years of news items and TV magazine shows and the like (if not personal experience) to firmly teach us that handing over such details is a bad idea so perhaps it’s a case of a lack of education? Not sure how best to address that though.

I’ve been called by HSBC a few years back to be told that my card was being used in Canada. I told them I was going to hang up and call back. Turns out it was a legit call. So yeah this stuff can and does happen.

The important thing to remember is we dont have all, or probably even 10%, of the facts. Unless a transcript is released then we are just wildly guessing. There’s also the possibility this is a vulnerable customer, which is also something we will never know

In an age where email, live messaging, WhatsApp, SMS etc. all exist I can wholeheartedly say same, and I’m not just talking about banking.

Not saying you’re wrong, as you say we’ll never know, but I’m pretty sure The Sun would have leaped on the fact if he was a vulnerable customer.

Yes they will.

I’m always cautious, but iOS 13 allows you to dump all incoming calls from numbers not in your contacts, or recents, to voicemail.

By way of a PSA
