Another thread, this card is really hitting home with people!
Watch Starling become the platform that runs Apple Card in the UK and Europe.
As similar as this is to monzo there’s a big difference between a debit and credit card.
Monzo still has huge potential around the world
.
Curious who runs the customer support. Apple or does it go through to GS staff?
My thoughts are GS simply because apple say they don’t see what you spend etc.
at those cashback rates but it’s never going to happen over here with interchange fees being capped. As others have said we would see something closer to 0.5%.
Apple Card will never come to the UK
The amount of people talking about this on our social media and tagging our official company account is pretty ridic right now! Even Wired are calling it a competitor to us
I wonder though, as it’s a credit card, what their acceptance/risk rate will be for it. It’s interesting, and I think they’ve definitely been doing their research. We’ll be following along closely
I can’t see it coming here for a good while. If only because they wouldn’t be able to offer the same level of rewards.
contactless in the US isn’t as strong as here. By Apple launching this it’s essentially pushing retailers to get on board.
I wasn’t aware of how common place credit cards are in America.
I prefer Visa myself.

If I was #AmericaExpress I’d be like … shiiiiit
Won’t come here for a while, we don’t have Apple Pay Cash at present, never mind the difference in charging structure between the two markets.
And the guy who says it’s a competitor for Monzo - really, what planet is he on? Bread is a competitor for crumpets for filling me up - now that’s a suitable analogy.

Lots of “What are Monzo gonna do now?” type questions

Clearly someone from Apple saw this ad on the tube and thought “not having any of that”
Everyone going on about Apple copying Monzo is completely missing the point (did Monzo actually pioneer any of these things).
In the grand scheme of things Monzo is a niche product. Apple Maps and Music have shown the power of defaults for competing with actual market giants.

I can imagine them saying Apple Pay is the only secure way of paying. Contactless built into the card is dangerous.
There’s no point in the card having contactless - if somewhere accepts contactless, then it also accepts Apple Pay. It’s for back up when contactless isn’t available.
Plus contactless on Apple Pay is secure, it’s not on a card (as in anyone stealing it can use contactless).
Only reason as far as I can see for other banks cards having contactless is that obv not all their customers will use Apple/google pay, whereas all customers of Apple card will have Apple Pay.
The ‘no fee’ claim was the first thing I went to check.
This card is clearly aimed at a market for which interest rates are the norm and gets all its gratification from cashback rewards. I’m not saying that things are much better in the UK (I’m thinking: overdraft fees), but the mere fact that paying your balance in full is advertised as a breakthrough approach to managing your everyday finances says a lot about how credit cards are used in the US. That insane cashback is paid by the interest that most people will still end up paying.
Nonetheless, it looks fantastic and I would totally get it if it were available here
What if your phone runs out of battery, or you lose it?
That won’t stop you from being able to use the physical card though. Just you’d use chip and pin. I would say that the frequency of losing phone/running out of battery should be rare enough for this not to be an inconvenience.
You’re much more likely to come across somewhere which doesn’t take contactless, than run out of battery, in terms of occasions where you would need to use the chip and pin with the physical card.
In the year and a half I’ve had my iPhone X, I have never once run out of battery out and about. I can however think of many more (still a low percentage though) occasions where contactless hasn’t been available and I’ve had to use chip and pin.
