Amex (American Express) Discussion

Do I need to close the cashback first?

No you can have up to 5 cards.

No, you can have multiple with them.

I have the every day cash back Amex card and have tried a couple of times to apply for the blue points card but they outright reject me. They say that it’s due to my Experian credit record but there is no evidence that they’ve checked any of the CRAs (i.e. no soft searches).

I obviously fail their internal checks for some reason. I have a good credit limit on my Amex cash back (best of any of my cards) and put a decent amount through the card every month. Maybe they don’t like that I pay it off every month!

Could be, but would’ve been happy to transfer the limit entirely at one point.

Yes, easily.

It’s pretty much moot now because the value of the points when converted to Nectar points is now equivalent to the 0.5% cashback I already get.

You’d think that they’d tell you that, though, and give you the opportunity to reduce your overall limit rather than just sending a stock email blaming your credit record :slightly_smiling_face:

You seem to be under the misapprehension that credit card companies use common sense

Amex do a new search if you want a different type of card product don’t they unlike in the US?

I.e if you have British Airways but wanted the Gold Card or Cashback they run another search I assumed

As the blue card doesn’t appear on the list of cards when I complete the eligibility checker, does that mean it wouldn’t be available to me? All the other cards, apart from one, give 9.5 chance.

What’s the formula to calculate the monetary value of AMEX points?

Example, what would 50k points be worth?

They convert to vouchers at a rate of 0.5%, so you’d get £250 worth of vouchers.

Slightly more than that. If you convert to Avios and then to Nectar it’s 0.67%.

If you’re actually flying somewhere with them, it can be more than that. I just count them as 1% because that’s simpler  I gather if you really plan well, you can maybe get to 2% but that’s on long haul flights with upgrades and the like.

You can get a good value for the Avios if you manage to get a short haul flight when cash tickets are expensive. Think bank holidays, football matches, sunshine destinations. 16k Avios for a return ticket to most of Europe is a bargain for peak time flights.

Even outside overly peak time, we cleared 0.7% on Dublin to Germany return. As you say, with good timing you could do better. I’m sticking with my 1% assumption though

Oh, and if you’ve the BA card and manage to hit the companion voucher, the value is double.

Nope - 0.5%.

1000 Amex points converts to 1000 Avios, which converts to 1000 Nectar points.

Ah, forgot that they downgraded the conversion.

Better to leave it as Avios now. As I say, I managed 0.7% but it would have been 1.4% if I’d spent a touch more and got the companion voucher.

Anyone got the Hilton / Marriott cashback deals on multiple Amex cards? I have them on the platinum card was hoping I might see them on the gold card too.

On Supplementary cards I do, but primary cards only once.

hum… don’t have that on my Platinum card…
