It’s already installed where I’m going
SOGEA (FTTC without an analogue voice line), SOGFAST (G.Fast without one) and SOADSL (ADSL without one) will ultimately replace traditional phone services quite quickly as Openreach get ready for the PSTN (analogue phone network) switch-off in 2025. Even landline phone-only lines will be moved to IP delivery with SOTAP.
Over time, this will make listening to the line at the cabinet impossible so engineers will have to change their practises. It was also never official policy to unplug “spare” lines anyway, as it makes it more difficult to reactivate them later. So rogue engineers shouldn’t be doing this now and, as the transition occurs, it will become more difficult for them to do so and hopefully it will happen less.
You probably had a full FTTC cabinet that they kept trying to “make space” in!
SoGEA is definitely getting more popular. Waiting for zen to offer it here so I can switch. Why pay for a phone line that’s never used?
