Getting played, even now PIA is 90% cashback.
Think in total I have paid £2. something for 3 years.

I am a payable ProtonMail user, but not using their VPN very often . Still, I like the service
I also reccomend ProtonVPN. They are the only provider I really trust. I have used them for years - I never connect to the internet in the UK without a VPN either and yet I have no connection speed issues.
Recently signed up to Mullvad and very impressed so far.
Speeds haven’t been affected even a tiny bit, complete lack of info collected at signup is brilliant, and the apps for windows and iOS are both great.
I’ve just started using ProtonVPN today, so far only on the free tier to see that it’s like.
It’s fired up on Google TV, works really well at streaming. So much so I’ll no doubt purchase it on an annual fee and use it on every device.
I use Proton, it’s great
Do you know if they’re providing ipv6 connectivity yet? It’s been coming this year since 2019. Much like Nord another I can’t remember the name of now.
I really need ipv6 connectivity to persist over my vpn clients at this point. Too much breaks when they simply black hole it.
I know there are some that do work with it, Mullvad, IVPN, and perfect privacy, or the one I’ve been helping: Azire. But these come with various other quirks that make them not ideal even with ipv6. VyprVPN is my best all rounder (despite the accounts migration farce of 2020) and if they had ipv6 they’d be almost perfect. Proton would be a solid replacement candidate with ipv6.
I don’t know tbh. But I use it for 100% of my my browsing and nothing seems to break…
Please excuse the internet noob question, but what is IPV6? And is it important for privacy?
Every computer and device connected to the internet has a number assigned to it. That’s called an IP address and is a little bit like a telephone number.
The previous standard for IP addresses was IP version 4 (IPv4). The problem was that we were running out of numbers so version six was brought in to give us a whole load more numbers so we won’t run out.
Think of it a bit like the internet’s version of going from an 01 dialing code for London to 0171/0181, then to 020 (if you’re old enough to remember that!)
Very helpful explanation, thanks!
nope they don’t support it yet
Not necessarily. It has other improvements over its predecessor though that can be as equally important in some setups.
There’s a few comparisons online, the points are pretty much all the same because they’re objective advancements, so on the subject of VPNs, here’s Nord’s:
The biggie for me is ditching NAT. The security improvements too, to a lesser extent.
If privacy is your only goal, I’ve heard it argued that ipv4 is actually better for you, because you could be sharing it with other users which can obfuscate your activity by it blending with the activity of other users. VPNs aren’t always necessarily clear whether you’ll benefit from that though, because they don’t always tell you if you’ll be sharing it or if it’s dedicated to your connection.
IP is generally a poor way of trying to identify someone anyway so I think privacy is a bit moot in that context. From RevK’s blog:
Obviously, with a suitable order, we can disclose subscriber details for an IP address, but we always stress the this does not identify a person or user, or even that the source of any IP traffic is in the premises and not spoofed, relayed, Tor, or the result of a virus, just in case the police officer in question is not aware of that!
Anyone who’s used both which do you recommend, NordVPN or Proton VPN? Mainly will be used on Google TV on my Sony TV and Chromecast with Google TV upstairs…
I see Proton VPN has a free tier, any good?
Free tier is a bit slow, but it’s worth trying!
Too slow for streaming TV stuff?
Could probably do HD, but not 4K. I don’t believe the free version unblocks streaming services though, so you might find it getting blocked.
My favourite VPN right now, especially after the big price reductions is Vypr. That works with streaming services. I just like that they own their entire infrastructure end to end, and it’s why I remain drawn to them as the best all around for me. Too many third parties you have to trust with the likes of Nord, and it’s bitten them once or twice in the past. Helps that they were among the first to get split tunnelling working on the new Apple silicon versions of macOS after Apple completely upended the old way of doing things.
From a privacy standpoint I put them well above Nord, but probably below Proton.
I’ll give the free version of Proton VPN a whirl now and see what happens, I don’t mind paying for a good VPN as long as it works on my Google TV so I can use it while streaming.
Should point out incase you go looking at Vyper, because I’ve just checked. The prices are back to normal now: $60 per a year.
There was a period not too long ago where they were offering a 3 year subscription for that same $60 price, which is what I’m on. ~£20 per year is a bargain by any standard in the VPN space.
Let us know how you get on with Proton! Been a while since I’ve tried em.
