I also reccomend ProtonVPN. They are the only provider I really trust. I have used them for years - I never connect to the internet in the UK without a VPN either and yet I have no connection speed issues.
Recently signed up to Mullvad and very impressed so far.
Speeds havenāt been affected even a tiny bit, complete lack of info collected at signup is brilliant, and the apps for windows and iOS are both great.
Iāve just started using ProtonVPN today, so far only on the free tier to see that itās like.
Itās fired up on Google TV, works really well at streaming. So much so Iāll no doubt purchase it on an annual fee and use it on every device.
I use Proton, itās great
I donāt know tbh. But I use it for 100% of my my browsing and nothing seems to breakā¦
Please excuse the internet noob question, but what is IPV6? And is it important for privacy?
Every computer and device connected to the internet has a number assigned to it. Thatās called an IP address and is a little bit like a telephone number.
The previous standard for IP addresses was IP version 4 (IPv4). The problem was that we were running out of numbers so version six was brought in to give us a whole load more numbers so we wonāt run out.
Think of it a bit like the internetās version of going from an 01 dialing code for London to 0171/0181, then to 020 (if youāre old enough to remember that!)
Very helpful explanation, thanks!
nope they donāt support it yet ![]()
Go via TCB or quidco.
I have Nord and Private internet access - both were 100% cashback, so havenāt paid anything for them.
Surfshark is 95% at the moment on quidco as a very quick example.
Never! You are missing out
Login to cashback site
Find what you want
Click through to the vpn site
Pay as normal.
They are basically the middle man but you get a % which in this case is 95%+.
Cashback sites are amazing, £190 from my Virgin broadband, £40 for my phone - I am u to £3K + now on quidco of free money.
If you want a referral link let me know - you get extra free money
Topcashback/Quidco - you click from their website through to merchant and make purchase.
Transaction tracks your purchase and can take some time to track certain cashback amounts (need a browser with cookies on to do this).
Then usually 3+ months before it gets paid to you, plus 3-5 days withdrawn time from cashback site.
Depends on the provider it is usually a few months but my recent O2 sim I got paid in under 3 weeks
You can also get it uplifted instead of taking cash so you get an extra 2% if you take it as an uber voucher for example.
Itās free money - well worth signing up.
I have ProtonVPN (paid). Use it for most browsing and lots of TV, itās really reliable. Also I really trust their security ethos - although less important to me personally, I like to support a business that provides a truly secure VPN for those who need it. The only time I switch it off is downloading huge files like games.
Hopefully you went via a referral - extra £10 free for you
Yes, this is one of the things I look for. However, Proton VPN claims (or claimed - havenāt checked recently) that they donāt keep logs, but managed to provide such information when ordered by a court. This was two or three years ago, so maybe things have changed now.
Yes, they log if compelled to do so by a Swiss court and they have updated their privacy policy to reflect that.
This is unavoidable unfortunately, I think - a company canāt operate against the law. They use Switzerland because itās courts and laws are about the most privacy friendly in a Western country, but doesnāt make that foolproof
I have had both
I liked the router for some devices that couldnāt take a VPN - back in the days it was Apple TV and Xbox for cross game buying.
Now I am all in on apps however at router level it does make things easier to a degree, I tried it but in the end I had to install it on devices as iPlayer, Netflix didnāt work reliably. With Nord I have the VPN on autoboot on the TV for every app except the UK tv apps, Netflix etc. You also get a lot more google captchas when using a VPN which just got on my nerves in the end.
Nord are rubbish for privacy and marketing, (fake discounts that are actually their real prices, sneaky auto-renew that turns itself on), and itās completely rubbish on restrictive networks (mostly doesnāt work in schools and countries with big firewalls), BUT their product works well for streaming and the customer service is outstanding (source: used them for 3 years).
ProtonVPN are great for privacy and now works pretty much everywhere (the only VPN to still work in Iran at the moment), not sure about customer service as I havenāt had to contact them yet.
AirVPN is another good one, itās a bit rought around the edges, but it has tons of different options for protocols and ports to go through most firewalls, and lots of pricing options, not just monthly or annually.
If you only want it for streaming non-UK streams, Nord should work fine for you.
I would check there are apps for all the platforms you have (I believe there are).
I did not use it for streaming much, but the times I did use it it worked fine.
Just watch out for the auto-renew option, and make sure itās set to what you want it to be at regular intervals.
