USA Specific Feature Requests

I think @jtaylor69 is referring to trial ACH debits to verify an account before linking.

So in the US to set up an ACH link a vendor will deposit / withdraw a few cents and you need to provide the vendor with the exact amount to verify the link. Then this is reversed.

Oh so it’s confirmed? Oof.

Have Monzo confirmed this? I suspected it would be the case but haven’t read it from Monzo.

That sounds like how PayPal verify bank accounts but this is done by faster payment rather than BACS (ACH) these days. The active check @jtaylor69 was referring to is a uk Active card check.

That’s right. As mentioned, it’s just a simple card check from the merchant as to see if the card is legitimate. This is labeled as such in the feed, which makes it clear to the user

One feature that would be really nice to have is real-time explanations of why your card failed. I’ve been traveling overseas the last couple weeks and my card only worked 3 times of about 10 places I tried.

I’d also really like to see the category breakdown of spending that’s live in the UK app to be available in the US version.

We have this on the UK app so hopefully you get this too. Nice to be able to see that I’ve entered the wrong CVV (3 digits on back of card) and so on.

Edit, here’s an example:

I know that when we picked up our cards at the SM launch we were told that the beta did not allow for ACH into the account e.g. a paycheck etc. What’s the timeline on this feature currently? Any updates?

I hope this comes to the UK app too. As I travel to the US every two weeks it would be a life saver when in the US and Canada!

Hey hi, an actual real live American here! :monzo_usa:

the #1 one thing that I want that i want to see from monzo right now (that most traditional banks already have) is… the ability to create and deposit cheques for free

it baffles me that america still continues to use a very insecure method of paying people (cheque theft is big deal around here), but it’s still the way of life unfortunately:

  • when i went to the pennsylvania department of transportation to change my gender earlier this year, they only accepted cheques or money orders
  • most government jobs and lower-paying jobs (incl a food place i worked at), won’t don’t do direct deposit. you are literally handed a physical paycheque on payday
  • my last landlord only accepts cheques or cash in the mail for rent payment :scream:

right now, if someone hands me a cheque, i either have to swallow a $5-20 fee to cash it, or i could take a bus 90 minutes out of my way to a k-mart that will cash my cheque for free. nope, not ideal at all.

For reference, as a US customer it looks like this:

Whilst a great idea, I’m pretty sure a lot of US retailers include tips in the overall price now

It’s restaurants that are the issue. And a lot have started suggesting tips, but the numbers can be quite ridiculous- I’ve seen tip suggestions that start at 20%.

20% is pretty bog standard for good, but not exceptional service. Anything less and it indicates a problem with service.

Tips are a tipped workers wages. The restaurant only pays ~$2.00/hr

I’m just a bit uncomfortable with how fast that’s risen, I guess. I could have sworn even just a couple of years ago that 15% was the baseline for a satisfactory experience.
