Unified Search is Live!

I have it! I love the ability to search across connected accounts.

Firstly, this is significantly improved and the UX is much cleaner.

Has this come at the expense of being able to export transactions? I can only seem to do them via exporting bank statements?

omg same, very similar figure and I near passed out.

Yay! I have this now. There looks a lot to it on first play.

Pretty sure the figure is wildly inaccurate. For me at least, it’s showing a figure that would be about 10 years take home salary despite having only been with Monzo for 6 (plus I don’t spend all of it).

It’s most likely including transfers back and forth between accounts as spending, so it’s counting the same money as spent multiple times.

Now I’m 99% sure this is the case.

The Total Spent figure within the unified search is around 3.5x the value of what I’ve actually spent when compared against the combined yearly totals in the Spending tab.

I would be great to hear from Monzo about this feature and give us a bit of a deep dive and a potential roadmap :folded_hands:

It’s a March miracle!!!

Not so keen on this change- previously you could easily type in transactions or merchants into the box- now when you search it only has a set number of merchants available to find using a check box system.

Also feels like it has made the app a bit laggy

Weirdly for direct debits/ standing orders it still allows the old system

Looks very handy indeed though sadly it means that ‘Total spent’ no longer appears when you click a hashtag on a transaction, which essentially searches that hashtag. Perhaps if ‘Total Spent’ toggle stayed on permanently after activated on a search it would remain on hashtags too.

Clicking a # within a single transaction it brings up all the same tags for that account (old search) and doesn’t display all the same # across all accounts (new search minus Flex).

Alongside Activity, Payees and Help which are all pretty self-explanatory, there’s also a “Money” option. I’m not quite clear on its purpose right now, perhaps a placeholder for future functionality?

Great to be able to search Flex transactions at last, though it’s a shame that Notes on Flex transactions aren’t searchable yet — i.e. I can search for “Tesco” but not “fuel”.

Purely personal preference, but I’d prefer if previous searches weren’t saved. Right now I find myself clearing them manually each time.

I also find the dismissal behaviour slightly awkward — having tapped Activity, my eye is then drawn to the x inside the pill to close it — when actually it’s the top right “Close” link which dismisses the pane entirely. (This comes down to a broader design question about the IA of this screen really.)

Apologies if I am being dumb here, how do I see total received (as well as spent) eg. I tag my salary, solar FIT payments and other things. Searching the keyword before allowed me to see the total at the bottom of the screen. I can’t seem to see that information now, even with the ‘Total Spent’ toggle on (even though its not technically spending!)

@AlanDoe will the team responsible for building new search be able to come post and provide some more detail and any future functions eg tags in Flex showing in search. Thanks :folded_hands:

:waving_hand: Hello from the Search squad, and thanks all for testing out the new search functionality! First of all, as you’ve already noticed, when releasing any new big feature like this, there are bound to be some rough edges. I’ll try to list the things mentioned in the thread and how we’ve fixed or looking into them:

  • Total income/spend. For the initial release this was controlled by a toggle but we quickly realised this was not a good idea. The logic in the latest version is that this information automatically pops up when you enter a query (of more than 2 characters) or you pick a filter. The information we display depends on the type of transactions in the results. I’ll let you play around with it to discover exactly how it works.
  • Set number of merchants as checkboxes. This was mostly a UX decision. The idea is that these act as quick filters for merchants. If you end up having to search for a merchant inside the filter, why not simply put that search term in the box? If you have a particular use case for that, please describe it!
  • Tags. We introduced tag functionality very recently (I think last week). Clicking on the #tag subtitle on a transaction should now also point to the new search. Also when you search for a #tag, it should behave more like a filter and less like a search term. So a search like “#beer coffee” will return all transactions that contain the term ‘coffee’ in the title or notes words. So ‘Department of coffee’ or ‘Coffeemania’ would match. But we’d only include transactions that have the exact tag ‘#beer’ in the notes (so ‘Beer garden’ would not match). Hope that makes sense. Again, I encourage you to play around with it and see what you get.
  • Flex transaction support. Again, we literally added that about a week ago  It should work now. But to make sure this works for your whole history, it’s worth logging out and then back in (so we refresh your transactions). We’ll trigger a refresh for everyone remotely soon, but if you wanna try it out now, this is quicker.

In general we’re actively working on this, so expect to see more coming up soon. Please keep the feedback coming, we really appreciate it!

All of that makes sense and works for me. I thought something might have happened because tag searches was only bringing back things for the last few weeks. I’ve logged out and in again it’s working properly :tada::tada:

Flex transactions work great.

However tags on flex transactions don’t work still.

It really is brilliant. It will become a very powerful tool. Couple things: flex tag search doesn’t work still despite doing what was suggested. The tag search is extremely slow on iOS. It loads up the searches one by one and the next only appears if you scroll down to the end, a new merchant appears.

Can confirm that searching tags now works with Flex transactions.

I think this is new. You run a search and can now export the results in a spreadsheet.

I wonder if the Unified Search has caused the rest of the app to be so laggy.

I guess the increase in customers won’t have helped either (from a speed perspective)
