Monzo has brought over a lot of people who have signed up mainly for the fee free travel benefits, however, I think once Monzo is properly up and running as bank / place to manage your money, I think there would be more of an incentive to switch not just for the cheap travel fees.
However as the product stands in its current form, I do see why it wouldn’t appeal to you as much if the fee free travel was gone.
I’ve been with Monzo since it’s the very beginning of the Alpha Launch when it was Mondo, it has yes saved me lots of money while travelling and I’m currently writing this from Spain and it’s saved us as a family money using it over here too.
Once the full banking system is up and running yes there would be more incentives to move to Monzo, and I do agree where the charges are much higher to withdraw your money we should stump up some if not all of the few, but in Europe it would be incredible to still have a free cash withdrawal as when you are on holiday you do mainly pay with cash when you’re out and about.
My bad, didn’t realise the options hadn’t already been posted. The straw poll was on how to structure overseas ATM fees. All three options were said to be not final and basically cost neural and were:
1% in Europe, 2% Rest of World, no free buffer
1.5% outside UK, no free buffer
4% outside UK, £200 free buffer per month
@anon91821566 said that he thought the issue would likely be put to a vote of the entire user base. If he did it would be good to see some form of potential voting used, not just first past the post.
It was suggested my an audience member that an annual buffer might be better and this was acknowledged as an option but it was stated that the annual figure would likely be a lot lower (compared to 12x £200).
We weren’t told anything about the options or any voting on overdrafts other than that it’s possible that this might be voted on by the whole user base too.
ID verification completed overnight so I now have an active and funded Monzo current account
I think I just got into the first 700 - well past that in the last hour!
Tim Chung (who starred in the1st episode of Monzo Insider) has shared his experience of getting a current account in the first two minutes of this video -
That was the policy but it seems it changed mid-session, presumably because of how long the ID verification was taking. Since it seems that lots of us got verified between 2am and 4am this morning it’s a good thing they did let us take them and leave…
I suppose it does depend where in the world you are, in Thailand I used a lot of cash. I’m currently in a tiny village in Spain where it’s predominantly cash with no card machine. But when I was in NYC I never used cash and only used card for card payments.
It looks like this conversation would be perfect for this topic -
you’re welcome to continue it here (I think moving it would cause too much confusion now) but it’s likely to get buried among the other 650 odd posts in this topic & ultimately, overlooked when it comes to the consultation
You can quote text from these posts so that you can reply to them in that topic - if you have any questions on how to do that, I’d be happy to explain in a DM
