Revolut Chat

I have used Revolut recently to sell my crypto coins but not via their crypto service.

Its great to use with Coinbase as you can make use of spinning up EUR account and getting an IBAN number. I then link and send my money from Coinbase to Revolut, exchange it to GBP and either send it to my main account (monzo) or use the card.

Also premium is month free trial which then allowed me to order a free premium card with express delivery.

Going to France in couple of weeks so want to try them both.

Came here to share my (brief) experience of using Revolut. In short, I wouldnā€™t bother with them. For full explanation read onā€¦

I signed up for cheap international transfers, because thatā€™s the one feature Monzo doesnā€™t support that I really needed. I have a large amount of Euros that I needed to transfer to the UK, and the cheapest and simplest way appeared to be by using Revolut. Why? Because the receiving bank account needed to be in my name, so using TransferWise was not an option. I also thought it would be great to have separate currency accounts for when I travel too, so I ended up paying for their premium service.

The problems came when I realised the paltry limits Revolut place on each account. I have no issues with verifying my ID and providing source of funds etc. It was more the way Revolut handled the process that really ground my gears.

To start with, their response time is nothing like Monzo. You might wait a day or two before hearing from anyone. They style their support as in-app chat, which sets certain expectations. They would be better off providing support via email, as that is the typical response times youā€™re looking at.

Then you have the issue of the app not always sending you a notification when you have a new support message. So because it takes so long to receive a response, you obviously donā€™t sit on the app waiting for a message to come through. So you miss their replies. Then because they donā€™t get a reply instantly from you, they sign off from the chat. Next time you reply, you get a different support agent eventually respond. So what you get is a time consuming support experience where you have to explain everything every time you reply.

Yes, for some reason, each support agent doesnā€™t appear to read the previous messages. So you have to explain everything again every time you do anything theyā€™ve asked, like submit payslips for verification of source of funds. They also like sending you template responses and not actually dealing with your specific request. This instantly frustrates me.

Then thereā€™s the issue that English doesnā€™t appear to be anyoneā€™s first language. They constantly miss the intricacies of the language and donā€™t understand what youā€™re saying, even when you try and speak as clearly and simply as possible. They also find it very difficult to explain simple concepts and end up making simple things appear very complicated. When you combine this, with nobody reading previous messages in the thread and repeated template responses, the whole experience becomes one hell of an ordeal.

Finally because I wanted to transfer a large amount, they instantly became very suspicious of me, even after I had submitted ID and payslips. Their tone towards me was at times very unprofessional and quite offensive.

In the end Iā€™d had enough. I transferred any money I held on Revolut to my Monzo bank account and asked them to cancel my premium membership. Iā€™d rather pay more for a better service and less hassle.

If I sound frustrated when you read this, itā€™s because Iā€™ve just got off the support chat from them.

All I can say is Iā€™m glad I invested in Monzo. Monzo might not yet have all the ā€˜featuresā€™ of Revolut but they are by far a much better company doing things the right way. Iā€™ve never had anything but good things to say about Monzo and using my Monzo account is a breeze.

As an aside to this, they now want to charge me a Ā£14 cancellation fee because there is a 12 month contract for premium accounts.

Nowhere was that highlighted when signing up. Yes itā€™s in their terms and conditions, which is conveniently hidden away.

This is a screenshot from their website. Itā€™s similar in app too. Again no mention of any contracts at all and not even a link to their T&C here. No asterisk next to the monthly payment. Nothing. Nada.

I have refused to pay it out of principle. I donā€™t believe duping customers into a contract is very ethical. Another reason to avoid Revolut. Their whole way of doing business just seems very shady. I hope they crash and burn.

Iā€™m always wary when companies charge any money and then tell you what you get ā€˜freeā€™ with it. Itā€™s not free, youā€™re paying for it :rage:

In the iOS app I pressed the button to ā€˜Get Premiumā€™ and this prompt appears stating the 12 month contact. It isnā€™t great, but you are still informed before you purchase.

they sign off from the chat. Next time you reply, you get a different support agent

Same shitty service as Starling then. Iā€™d bet good money itā€™s powered by Zendesk as well.

Thanks for the feedback. yet another reason to avoid them. :-1:

Pretty sure you dont have a starling account and are just upset cos you couldnt reopen one? Maybe you meant anecdotally thoā€¦

reopen one

Well no, Iā€™m not upset, as the only reason to reopen an account was to have a look at their latest innovations and give them a chance to redeem themselves. I never planned to actually use it as my main account, unless they at the very least built their own card processor or switched to a more reliable one.

Iā€™m not saying Starling is as bad as Revolut, but it is going in that same direction especially with the chat advisors signing off pretty much immediately. I donā€™t say that with joy, as I wish all of them success (including Revolut), but from my observations I just canā€™t recommend either of them given those issues at the moment. Still wishing both of them luck as everyone deserves a second chance. :+1:

the chat advisors at Starling are not signing off it is their system that is timing out (it is dreadful IMHO)

nice to see the Starling in app status of service symbol on the home screen though - quite a nice feature if anyone was to ask me

I was on Android at the time and didnā€™t see any such notice.

Revolut now allow top ups via credit cards for free since card fees were banned.

Yep, this development is really neat.

Hi James

Not sure what the problem is with Transferwise, as Iā€™ve transferred sizeable sums between accounts in my name (though I may be missing something :flushed:).

You canā€™t use TransferWise with cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase

Ah, yes. I I didnā€™t connect the crypto reference. Yes, I used Revolut for that purpose.

Wait, what? They do now allow them, and they didnā€™t before? Am I understanding that right? Thatā€™s basically the opposite of other places who decided they didnā€™t want to take them if they couldnā€™t charge a fee.

You could previously top up with a credit card for a 1% fee, the fee has now disappeared which in theory means people can use revolut to complete money transfers for nothing!

Nice. Does it get posted as a cash transaction or a purchase? Most credit card issuers charge for cash transactions, and practically all have no zero-interest grace periodā€¦

Itā€™s a purchaseā€¦!
