Our new Monzo Premium travel insurance provider is here šŸ

It is a little ambiguous.

Can’t remember which insurance it was, maybe Nationwide, which had a list of things that aren’t classed pre existing and it was if I remember rightly, quite the list which was nice to see.

As will Barclays. This is what I do, and until Monzo cover pre-existing conditions for a fee, Barclays will continue to get my business.

Pretty much all bar Monzo cover them with various fees.

The HSBC premier one is superb and what I would hope Monzo would become. It covers pre-existing conditions (listed below) for free. While it comes for free as a benefit of the account I’d actually pay for it (hope no one from HSBCs reading that :joy:)

Haven’t read the whole post just yet - will come to that…

But WOW.

Proper in app servicing of my insurance claim?!

Amazing - this has been one of my biggest bug bears of the Packaged accounts historically - it’s just such a pain doing anything with it… why even bother…!

But hopefully in app claims management will make that a breeze.

Thank you for solving that problem for me personally

I’ve just come here to post about this. Pre-existing medical conditions not being covered, without exception is grim. It puts so much risk on to the traveller and allows the insurance company to wash it hands of most claims.

Not a product worth using.

I have the same free HSBC Premier policy as @JIMMWX but just to add that Lloyds/TSB also cover a wide range of existing medical conditions.

Lloyds is:

Not making any provision for existing pre-existing medical conditions is a huge error imo and makes the product useless for many

I decided to downgrade away from Premium, given the recent insurance provider change, and while I did go through the process to downgrade yesterday, nothing happened until now… :man_shrugging:

I’ll wait a few more days and contact support if nothing happens.

Some interesting facts:

  • If you’re on the 6 month minimum term, there will not be a cancellation fee, if you cancel by 2 August.
  • The metal card will be usable and valid until it expires, or you lose it etc :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Monzo metal card used to only last two weeks after cancelling premium.

Wow that Lloyds policy looks brilliant! I might need to look in to an account with them.

Ooo that answers @Carlo1460’s question about the card

It will be interesting to see, because if you cancel it via the app directly, it says you’ll no longer have access to the metal card, yet the other journey states that the card will be usable until it expires.

Once they downgrade me, I can share what happens with it

I couldn’t agree more. My fear is the insurer will use the mere existence of my underlying conditions as a lever to weasel out of paying a claim.

This is what makes the Monzo policy essentially useless. It’s too easy for them to use an existing medical condition as a cop out.

Two feedback points here. First Is in future having a set of included conditions would be beneficial.

Secondly the limits really aren’t high enough if you have a family. I’m using the HSBC premier as an example. For example:

  • Ā£250 limit on missed departure vs Ā£1000
  • Ā£750 limit on lost/stolen baggage vs Ā£2500
  • Ā£5000 cancellation v Ā£7500
  • Ā£250 limit on money stolen v Ā£750

Both off the IPID document per trip

My working thesis is the original premium was designed around a specific user base. Young well off Londoner who liked to mooch around Europe either on their own or with a partner. In this case it’s probably fine.

But with a family of four it’s absolutely no where near, you’re better elsewhere in my opinion. I’d hoped at someone the change would support improvements to limits but seems not.

I got in contact with support today and they have confirmed that you can use the card until it expires

I had Premium for the insurance, but downgraded after 6 months, then opened a Virgin Money account for the insurance package. Ā£12.50 per month for their Club M account gets travel, gadget, phone and breakdown cover. Reading about the change here to Zurich and the comments about pre-existing medical cover prompted me to re-read what VM have to say about the matter. They cover some medical conditions, and point you in the direction of a list of other insurers that can help if they don’t cover one relevant to you. Unhelpfully they don’t have an exhaustive list of what they do / don’t cover, but advise a call to find out. But at least they do cover some. It’s a start!
