Waitrose? Sainsbury’s? Aldi? Lidl? Only Tesco & ASDA are offenders.
And Tesco is just using it as a bullying tactic to make you use their sh!t “Tesco Pay+” App.
And Tesco will be allowing Apple Pay over £30 soon.
Haven’t been able to use Apple Pay over £30 at Sainsbury’s, maybe that has changed recently. My local stores are Tesco and Asda and they definitely don’t.
Sainsbury’s here have supported this ever since they added contactless, so that’s odd.
I’m beginning to think that some of this is down to staff thinking contactless (under £30) and Apple Pay etc are the same thing, so when asked if I can use Apple Pay I’m told no when the reality is I should give it a go. Never recall seeing any promo about Apple Pay at Sainsbury’s.
As an aside in two of my local Argos stores (Leeds) you can’t even use contactless at the tills as they say they haven’t updated the equipment!
It seems we’re nowhere near ready to be rid of the card.
The post office limit Apple Pay to £30
They advertise accepting Apple Pay but the terminals don’t display the contactless symbol for any purchases over £30… attempted tapping my phone but nothing happened. I don’t understand companies that advertise accepting a feature that they don’t fully support. There’s no point advertising to accept Apple Pay when in reality it’s just basic contactless.
Does this mean Giraffe restaurant was wrong to not accept Apple Pay for over £30 a few weeks ago when I was there? That really concerned me because I’m trying to not take my physical card out with me more and more, and I was on a first date so it would have been embarrassing if I couldn’t have paid for it due to their archaic payment system.
Correct, all UK merchants should be supporting high value contactless now.
I wouldn’t necessarily rely on that though as a few major merchants failed to meet that deadline for all stores.
Silly question is high value contactless just applicable to Mobile payment schemes such as Apple pay and Google Pay or does it apply to physical debit cards as well?
It generally applies to mobile payment systems only. High value contactless requires support of CDCVM (Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method) and uses a method such as Touch ID, Face ID, PIN, or Password to authorise the purchase on your device, rather than entering your PIN on the terminal as you would with a Chip and PIN transaction.
Interesting… With the acceptance issue at Asda petrol stations I asked if I could pay with Google Pay and they said no because it’s over £30. Should I have been more persistent for them to try it?
ASDA are one of the merchants who didn’t make the deadline for all terminals but there is a staff education issue at many places where it was activated by the card payments providers without telling them.
Merchants can exclude Android and Apple Pay transactions over £30; where I work has never supported it.
Ahh ok. So it’s pot luck if it works then? I think I’ll politely ask to try it next time and I will see if my local accepts it then. Thanks!
I think you need to read a few posts up and then have a word with your manager
Cheers for the clarification makes sense from a security perspective. And TBH I hardly use my physical debit card at all nowadays was just curious.
Trust me, I have! I’ve no idea why but they won’t budge. Any attempt at contactless/Apple or Android Pay over £30 instantly fails.
Weird! If Mastercard want all merchants to support transactions over £30 on Apple/Google Pay, then why give them the option to limit it
I don’t use the card at all, but having a card give the possibility to withdrawal money any time. And Monzo make money when you use your Monzo card to make a payment, so for Monzo is better send cards
