yes but bear in mind that you are required to pay cash in order to buy it (put a deposit) and top it up each time
One thing I learned from HK is to always make sure you have the mag strip option on everyday as this can cause havoc when you pay. If you have it off, you can pay by chip and pin which is fine but you’d get charged more until the company you are buying from processes the transaction their end (max 5 days).
If you have the mag stripe option on then you will get charged th correct amount there and then, but you will need to sign on a credit card reader (this is very common in HK so don’t freak out )
So in short; TURN ON MAG STRIPE EVERYDAY WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN HK
The above also applies to Macau too by the way (which costs about £50 for a return ticket and is about an hour by hydrofoil)
I took money from the HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of China and Hang Sang without any issues, didn’t try anymore as these were either close to where I was staying or needed cash quick to pay for some wan ton and fishball noodles
Either way I recommend anyone to get an Octopus Card as it is the king (it’s like the Oyster card but over 9000 times better)
Has anyone used Monzo in Hong Kong. Heading there in a few weeks and I am slightly nervous after going full Monzo.
Try this thread:
Had absolutely no issues. Hong Kong is mostly a cash centred country but had no issues at any ATM’s or card terminals.
Paying with your Octopus card (like the Oyster card) is more commonly accepted than using card at 7/11’s etc.
Previous post is right - when you arrive you can buy an Octopus subway card in the airport and it works in plenty of places. Some places only accept UnionPay cards, most places accept MasterCard but it’s easier in hk with cash sometimes
Used it there last year and it was brilliant! Accepted everywhere I went! Adding on to the others grab an octopus card it’s is more commmonly accepted
Amazing thank you! I will look into the octopus card, I hear it includes tram, bus and ferry travel as well as the subway. I can’t wait to get there
Yeah and a few shops/bars etc accept it too! How long are you there for? Any question just shout! I have a few photos of it on my Instagram (jackbailley)
I am open to any suggestions, especially around food, I hear the Tim ho wan Michelin star restaurant is a must.
@KyleRisi I have moved you post here
