Currency
Greece uses the Euro (€).
Monzo users pay the Mastercard exchange rate with no added fees.
Greece is under capital controls, which include limitations to ATM withdrawals, these however do not affect foreign issued cards like Monzo.
Card usage
POS terminals, most commonly Chip & PIN, are mandatory for most merchants in Greece, including hotels, shops, restaurants and bars. Contactless acceptance is growing.
It’s not uncommon in heavy tourist areas for merchants to insist on taking cash in order to evade taxation. Excuses like “broken POS” can often be heard.
ATMs
Generally there are no extra charges for using bank ATMs. Take care to always use EUR and not to accept the ATM’s conversion rate to GBP (the rate is very bad compared the Monzo rate). ATMs are common throughout the country and any mid-sized town has at least one.
Payment and withdrawal limits
All Monzo cards have some payment and withdrawal limits. To check yours before you leave, go to your Profile section of the app and tap on Limits.
Crowdsourced merchant data
The Monzo merchant data is often incorrect eg map shows the wrong location or the name of the place is incorrect. Please submit improvements through the Monzo app so it can get better for future visitors.
