Currency

Along with most of the EU, Belgium uses the Euro (€)

Card usage

As with the Netherlands, overseas card acceptance will be certainly lower than you’d expect. Cash is still used extensively and lots of bars and restaurants remain cash only. Maestro is the kingpin there for card payments. In areas geared towards tourism you’ll find they’ve often resolved these issues and where accepted, contactless generally works flawlessly. Note the contactless pad is often on the side of the card machine.

ATMs

ATM card acceptance is profoundly patchy in Belgium, try using the ATMs at the Brussels airport arrivals/departures for cash ATMs operated by Belfius. ATMs are not as frequently seen as in the UK so you may need to consider how much cash you will require in advance.

Payment and withdrawal limits

All Monzo cards have some payment and withdrawal limits. To check yours before you leave, go to your Profile section of the app and tap on Limits.

Crowdsourced merchant data

Data will most likely be scant so please try and contribute relevant feedback about transactions
