Monzo Credit Card - what and why!

So hypothetically this pot will be shallow (with credit line), and I would be able to pay virtual card from it or like attach the debit card to it? Very interesting hypothetical proposition.

Not sure if this is still the most live and useful thread about Monzo and Credit offerings…

But there’s a new survey out that touches on Credit.

Anyone interested in some screengrabs?

Okay I tell a lie… Maybe sounded more about Credit from Q2 than I thought. Seems like a more general “how do you do monzo” with a few Credit Q’s dropped in.

will post anyway when I have them all

OK it seems to touch on both “Credit”, “How do you use these specific Monzo Features”, and “Financial Planning”.

Sorry about the terrible screen grab, some questions missed were on the lines of How are you doing against [previously ticked goal]

I got the same survey too. Definitely sniffing for financial planning information, possibly related to a credit offering.

I got it too.

Interesting that there wasn’t anything related to the Google Export for financial planning purposes. Is that because most people aren’t nerds who have built their own dashboard?

I’d build a YNAB replacement Google sheet in a heartbeat if Joint Accounts were supported. Then I could make my own super-focussed financial dashboard. Possibly the answer from a nerd though.

I also thought it was interesting that they didn’t list YNAB as one of the planning alternatives - but yeah sounds interesting.

I wonder where they think Google Sheets lives in terms of it’s use as a feature though - clearly they don’t think it’s part of the planning offering.

I suspect - and I might be overly cynical here - it was in development before Plus. Then when the need to launch a paid product became apparent they threw it in because it was an extra…

Not unlikely eh?

i am interested in a Monzo credit card that i can use abroad and other currencies (eg Euro zone) without fees as it currently happens with the normal debit card. Using a credit card helps me protect my cash flow/liquidity when i am on holidays (eg spend while abroad by pay later, eg after pay day).

Monzo don’t do this right now. There are credit cards out there with no fee overseas.

I don’t know if Halifax still do it but their Clarity card has no fees overseas.

Barclaycard Rewards is 0% foreign transaction fee as well :+1:

It’s a shame for me that they went with Flex, because my main use-case is hiring a car abroad and not wanting to fork over the full deposit in cash, but rather just have it locked on a credit card. Perhaps someday they will…

I guess flex is no FX fees and has credit card protection is using Google or apple pay

But they didn’t, and they broke into a new market other banks haven’t yet - buy now pay later - and if that isn’t helpful for you, then you wouldn’t need apply.

A credit card will come one day I’m sure :crossed_fingers:t3:

You might, but I (and lots of others) think it’s much better they’ve got Flex going before a credit card.

Flex does those except for rewards?

Flex something, pay first instalment right away, then pay off the whole balance in a month, or choose to pay it off over time knowing exactly what you’ll pay.

You’d only really get that with a credit card if you didn’t have any other balance on the card or increase the balance in any way. But payments will change as the balance lowers.

Don’t understand the negativity unless you’re not open to innovative products and prefer the old skool credit.

It would make more sense to incorporate the “original” credit card style into Flex so you had the choice of the two.

I mean, it encourages people to buy things before they earned the money, but that doesn’t mean they can’t afford it, it’s just moving the purchase date earlier with the trade-off of some interest. Do you think that people should only be able to buy a house once they’ve saved up for the whole amount? Obviously not .

Which you can also say about a credit card.

All finance products can be used wisely or badly.
