Personally I have high hopes for ETH. A global virtual machine using tokens as a resource. Certainly a very novel idea. I can see a lot of technical improvements as well since its inception. The DAO was very bad I agree, Some good did come from that botch though. It made it clear that Dao development and development as a whole on the platform needs to move towards a more patterned approach. Again I think we’ll see some great improvements in this area making it more accessible as a whole
I don’t really post here but as an investor with an interest in Monzo I’d like to share my 2 cents.
It is disappointing to hear monzo aren’t considering cryptocurrency features on there road map.
It isn’t something that is going away.
It is part of the financial present and future.
Mark Zuckerberg is considering blockchain features for Facebook.
Telegram are launching a massive $1.2 billion ICO.
Bitcoins market cap is growing year on year.
There are now almost 2000 alt currencies.
It is ignorant to think that the average person isn’t thinking about crypto investing. Binance, one of the newest growing exchanges has 240,000 new signups a day.
As a forward thinking, tech forward bank, I genuinely would have hoped it would be in your sights.
I have invested the maximum amount in every single round of monzo/mondos crowd funding campaigns and love the company, however I’ll be honest here, this is the first time I have been disappointed by Monzo.
Reading this thread has made me sad.
The reasons I personally love monzo and have pushed it onto all of my friends is because I truly believe it is forward thinking.
I do hope that this isn’t something that is completely ignored while competitors gain a headstart.
Don’t align yourself with the backward thinking banks that we all are trying to get away from!!
Welcome to the community. Look forward to reading your posts in future.
You could be right here but I have slightly different opinions on this. For me to be a disappointed investor I would need to have some unmet expectation that Monzo should have done something but didn’t. I have kept an eye on their road map, followed them on social media, read all their investment decks, listened to their board members talk (podcasts/events) about what they’ve done and are aiming to achieve - and nowhere across any of those channels have there been serious mentions of offering a crypto currency solution (maybe 1 tweet last year that made me think Dust might become a partnership in future, but nothing serious), so I couldn’t possibly be disappointed.
It is only since the sudden meteoric rise of the crypto bubble last month that a growing number of people have been shouting for Monzo to run the other way, when they already have a very clear and simple vision.
This year they need to launch lending and partnerships and make their current account more viable than incumbents, otherwise their business model doesn’t work and investors will not be looking forward to a nasdaq listing but bankruptcy, or even worse being RBS’s innovation lab.
The staff are all hands on deck working on those hugely important things, so I would not expect them to drop some of that and chase after a niche that was never in their road map just because it’s the flavour of the month and people are shouting about it.
Revolut already had the infrastructure to offer that crypto MVP very quickly (they’re already plugging into a price feed for USD, GBP etc and carrying out conversion in the app so they just need to plug into a BTC price feed.).
My personal opinion is that crypto currency is not an end game for fintech, it is just a sub category - like Regtech or insuretech. The end game is the marketplace and I’m happy that Monzo are being laser focussed on their goals rather than being distracted.
All very good points.
Don’t get me wrong I am still on board and believe in Monzo, the goals that they have set and what they have achieved to this date.
You are also correct in saying Crypto is flavor of the week at the moment. I think the issue for me is not that they haven’t really publicly (as far as I know) acknowledging it at all. It would be nice to hear them at least commenting on it in some fashion. Even if it is just to show that they have an understanding of it and they are staying apprised as it develops and grows (or doesn’t grow).
I want Monzo to be a bank always striving for better. Always looking forward and not backward. There is nothing wrong with sticking to a road map, sticking to a plan and also being sensible and cautious. The one thing I love about Monzo that really sets them apart for me isn’t there app or pots or any of that stuff. It’s there openness and honesty which in today’s business world and banking especially is a rarity.
I suppose what I am saying is whatever happens in the future, cryptocurrency is making waves in the financial community right now. It would be good for it to be acknowledged in some fashion to show they don’t ignore current events which may potentially have a big impact on finance and banking in years to come.
As far as I’m concerned we have two of the smartest people in the Crypto world on our team… @anon94554600 and @anon76573274 - so we’re very much aware of what is happening and on the pulse.
We hosted a Tezos meetup with the founder at our office and some other Crypto events as well like an introduction to Blockchain… It’s not like it’s something we ignore just because we have no plans to integrate a crypto offering into our app…
That is very good to know. Thanks for those links.
Tezos?? Oh man… Delete this comment immediately if you want to be taken
seriously. Just ask Simon and JordanFish if they are in crypto. Tezos is
one of the biggest scams in crypto and they have multiple class action
lawsuits being made against them.
We just hosted the CoinScrum meetup at our office for that event, I’m not making any comment or judgement on their offering (and frankly, don’t know enough about them to comment)
When this was run it was not considered negative by almost anyone at the time. The event was very informative and Tezos would have been a big contender as a functioning blockchain if it had gotten off the ground. Since then things have turned sour and we’ll have to see what happens with blockchain 3.0
I personally think
is going the right way with crypto. If it becomes main stream then it may be an interesting option, if they open the gates like Revolut and thousands of people/investors land up losing thousands of dollars, there could be a major backlash. Think Revolut has escaped this though.
It’s funny how people react. How many people have got others to invest in crypto, to see a small rise leading to big thanks, ans then for them all to experience a dip and get scalded for ‘investment advice’. That could be
When it’s more stable it would make sense to possibly open it up through the marketplace, possibly with a partnership.
Everyone needs to chill on the Monzo/Crypto thing already.
“Monzo needs to integrate crypto” “Monzo needs to integrate insurance” “Monzo needs to integrate takeaway food ordering”
How many legacy banks offer poor service because they offer way too many services in the app which just slows and fragments everything?
Monzo are focusing on becoming the best bank and right now, crypto doesn’t factor into banking. If it does in future, they will look at the landscape and come up with a great way of using it, but until then just ease off. There are many great platforms you can use to buy and trade cryptocurrencies, so use them, don’t waste time waiting or complaining about a lack of a feature barely anyone knows about/how to use.
If you know about cryptocurrencies, you are very very very very much in the minority. If you know where to buy and trade them, amplify that even more.
Chill guys, Monzo are not ignoring something as big as crypto, but until it becomes a feasible business decision - it’s unreasonable to chastise them for not incorporating it.
@simonb your response sums it up perfectly, there shouldn’t really be further discussion imo
I think Monzo is the only bank that is favourable for buying & selling Crypto. Most of the bank’s won’t even let you have an account if you deal in Crypto.
We were buying and sold some Crypto currencies and Monzo asked us what we were up to and provided all the proof and they were happy.
I really hope Monzo would offer a Business Account as we are a Fintech company and struggling to get a Business Account for Crypto Business.
On that note Monzo get’s my vote any day of the week.
Thanks
This is very interesting to know, I believe you are the only bank in the UK that is not so crappy about people involved in Crypto.
I have had excellent relationship with all High Street Bank’s and have a property business but the idiot’s won’t just give me a Business account for Crypto. Tried basically all of them.
I do hope in future Monzo is the leading player in this field.
They probably consider it along the lines of gambling?
