Meet the next generation: Monzo for Under 16s šŸŽ‰

Can I ask if it’s still a requirement for both parent accounts to be using the beta app to access fully the features of Monzo kids? I can remember if I previously saw a post saying it was fully rolled out?

Kids can be managed on the general App Store version.

General version but the additional parent doesn’t get to fully manage the account, it’s more limited than what the main parent can do. The main two things (at least for me) are that you can’t see card details or withdraw money

Under 16s savings accounts are now fully launched :rocket:

Great to see Monzo rolling out savings for under-16s. That said, I’m surprised this came before a Stocks & Shares JISA. For most families the real long-term goal is investing for a child’s future, not just holding cash, especially given that savings rates barely keep up with inflation.

With financial literacy and investment awareness in the UK still so low, offering a child-friendly investing option would arguably have a much bigger impact. Is a Stocks & Shares JISA on Monzo’s roadmap?

+1 for JISA.

Although I’m not sure how they would handle JISA implementation, as I believe you can open them from birth, but Monzo’s junior account offering starts from age 6, and is technically an extension of the parent’s account.

Major bug in this feature guys.

I opened 2 kids savings accounts for respective current accounts. Transferred the money but now can’t see or access the savings accounts. Looks like they should be in the savings section as when I go to edit layout they are selectable but not visible in the main screen.

No one answering your chat either!

Hi, I’m Zi - an engineer working on Under 16s accounts

You shouldn’t be able to add your kids savings accounts to your Overview screen (the home screen of your Monzo app). So we have now removed that from the list of options you saw when editing the layout.
Instead, to see your child’s savings, tap their card (from your Home screen), and then scroll down the screen that opens, you’ll see the Savings section with the savings there

Thanks for sharing this bug, it’s meant we’ve been able to improve the experience! Let us know if you have any other feedback

Just to add. I’m not sure how long you were waiting, but as an FYI, chat isn’t instant.

Leave a message and then you’ll receive a notification when someone has responded.

:frowning: Never did get a response to if the dog has a name - I do like the little quirky things like Hot Chip having a name etc :frowning:

Disappointed that my 14 year old son’s wages can’t be paid into his Monzo account (there are no distinct bank details to give payroll). So we are forced to open Nationwide account. Shame as we love all other features.

I think this pot name could probably be considered as a feature request from my daughter

When my kids spend their pocket money I get a notification ā€œ[child’s name] is rubbing low on fundsā€ and a suggestion to top it up. They get a weekly Ā£5 each Monday. (Can get more at 10p a chore).

Had the kids asking in a few museum gift shops can’t you pay me today and not pay me Monday. And I’m er nope I can’t go to my employer and ask for my pay to be paid a day or two early. Staff chuckling and agreeing at the conversation too.

So back to start of post, is there a way to turn the notification off especially with younger children. No point trying to get them to budget if they think they can get money any time they ask or Monzo thinks the balance in their account is a bit low.

Separately I seen for the first time in a shop on the UK where the kids used contactless and the payment terminal asked for a PIN (with app notification) and they didn’t need to insert the card first. They could just tap it on the screen.

Do U16 accounts have virtual cards? We’re trying to find the best way to give our daughter some money each week for school break snacks but keep it separate from her normal spending… Ideally she’d create a ā€œsnacksā€ pot with a virtual card attached, which we can keep topped up around Ā£10 or so. I’d like to avoid making her move money over every time she buys a snack, but also not mixing snack money (which we cover) with her own money.

edit: The original plan was to make her an additional cardholder on our NatWest credit card and have her only use it for snacks, but you need to be 18 to be an additional cardholder with NatWest…

While you can create a pot in a U16 account, I don’t believe you can create a virtual card linked to that pot or to the Child account itself.
