Meet the next generation: Monzo for Under 16s šŸŽ‰

I have been given this same step by Monzo support several times over the last 2 years. it fixes some of the app issues. Shame there isnt a function on the iPhone to ā€œrepairā€ an app, rather than delete.

On iPhone if you go settings, apps, Monzo, and the bottom reset session it’ll set it as new.

Unless I am mistaken, this only logs you out - it doesnt actually ā€œrepairā€ the app.

I’m sure it’s fixed something in the past for me.

So far really like the new offering and would love to come back to Monzo (started using Starling just for kite) but we really need both parents to be able to manage the under 16s accounts. How far off is this?

No it does not

It’s a decent start for Monzo, but for users this launch is both tantalising and frustrating.
We moved our 15 yr old and our 12 yr old from Starling’s U16 accounts (Kite Spaces) to Monzo.

(I appreciate that much of this has already been mentioned, but this is our pros and cons).

Pros:

  • Applepay works for the 15yr old.
  • Payment auth controls are better thought through on Monzo Vs Starling (less friction!).
  • Savings pots are great.

Cons (Monzo can fix):

  • Child can only be associated with a person account - U16 accounts should be able to be attached to join accounts. Starling’s Kite Spaces allows this.
  • Transferring Money both in and out of child accounts is a pain. Relatives ought to be able to give money directly to the child’s account. Starling has a kitelink that can be given to relatives.

Cons (Monzo can’t fix):

  • Applepay doesn’t work for our 12yr old as he’s U13

On balance it’s more convenient for us as we primarily use Monzo for banking; our 15 yr old likes Applepay on his phone for the bus etc… but our 12 yr old is a bit miffed that he’s stuck with a card, (albeit a very cool flouro one).

Keep going on this Monzo - you’re doing great

100% agree. This would be good. My partner was going to set up another account in hopes that they’ll merge. Not sure if it works like that though

Big risk, not just with the merging, but also with the uncertainty of when it will actually happen.

Unless you’re happy with the current situation, I’d suggest holding off until an official announcement, as the wait could extend for years.

I posted a similar idea earlier. Reposting here as I didn’t realise this thread was here for feedback. My idea is even simpler potentially than having a dedicated link - just automatically forward money based on a payment reference.

We love the new child accounts after having tried many including GoHenry and Rooster from my old NatWest account.

You’ve done a great job and on the whole I have no complaints at all.

It is perfectly understandable and reasonable that the kids don’t have their own bank account number and sort code.

But I would assume there is one thing you could do to make the process a little more seamless than it is currently.

Each child account could have a unique child reference number.

If the parent account receives a payment with a reference that matches the child reference number, you could skip the step of the parent having to transfer the funds and it could automatically be deposited into the child account.

E.g if a payment is sent to 040004 with my account number and a reference of XYZ, if that reference matches my child reference, the payment is sent automatically to the child account, skipping the payment account entirely.

This way, grandparents can be given my account details and the child reference, and there’s no action on my part (or delay) to transfer the money to the child.

Hi,
We’ve been setup with a children’s account that we were hoping to replace his Barclays account with. We’ve since discovered that the account doesn’t have an account number or sort code so family members aren’t able to send money to this account. Only I can see the child account in my app so not even my wife can’t send money to the account either (we have a joint account with Monzo) so it’s not very practical unfortunately.
Am I missing something or is this just a card not an actual account?
Thanks,
Richard

Nope not missing anything, that’s the current form of the u16 account.

Over time, this may change - likely two parents can add and monitor first.

Starling Bank seem to have rolled out a payment link service to their Kite accounts to allow others to make payments to the child accounts.

Hi,
Thanks for the clarification, I’ve advised my son to keep his Barclays account for now and we’ll keep an eye out for any updates.

Does anyone know the exact date that it will be released in November?

I might have missed it, but I’m not aware that any timeframes have been given?

when will this be released?

Do you need to receive the card first to do this?

From memory, no. The card is not needed to setup the Child account.

There is no ETA. It is still being tested
