Laser Eye Surgery

That’s why I don’t think I’d consider it unless necessary / could correct serious vision issues cheaper than special glasses (if I ever needed some). Not worth the risk just to not have to wear glasses.

The consultant said they had dealt with some people with very extreme cases of bad eyesight. I think it’s more than just “is my eyesight too bad”

The prescription you posted isn’t that bad. Mine was far worse. You will find that most of the big brand laser eye clinics will reject high prescriptions or any cases that are complex or will likely need additional aftercare. Their business is about high volume and minimal comebacks.

I found a specialist clinic a couple of years ago and I’ve had 20/10-15 (better than 20/20) vision since. I’ve had zero side effects as well. It was a good decision for me.

Admittedly, it doesn’t work out well for everyone though.

Do you know if there’s an age limit on getting this? I went through one of the online Optical Express questionnaires about it a few years back and it seemed to indicate that I couldn’t get Lasik/Lasek because I was over 45 and would need a more intensive Lens Replacement surgery?

I didn’t have one mentioned but I’m 33. So doubt they’d have said anything if I wasn’t.

As above it may just be you’re outside the target demographic for them specifically.

But - there was definitely someone in the waiting room who was over 45, but no idea if they were in for lens surgery or laser eye.

I’ve been thinking about this too. But my eyes are only -1.5, so not that bad, and maybe it’s not worth the very small risk.

There’s an advert on TikTok right now advertising Lasik for ‘over 45s’. That’ll be me, then.

Depends if you want to spend £4.5k on your eyes :stuck_out_tongue:

is it 4.5k per eye or for both of them? The number of times I’ve got no idea what’s on the powerpoint because I’ve forgotten my glasses haha

Mine are 4.5k for both. They’ve given 10% off & 24 months 0% finance as the offer.

24 months on 0% now that’s decent tbh. Guessing they use a 3rd party?

That’s the other issue. Checking Optical Express (who seem to be the ‘chain store’ version of eye surgery) pricing starts at £600 per eye for Lasek surgery which I think is the most common form of eye surgery.

But they also have ‘Lasek with iDesign’ which enhances the standard Lasek surgery with ‘innovative iDesign technology’ at £1,495 per eye.

Would you ‘skimp out’ on this with the basic surgery, or would you be more reassured paying the extra £1k per eye?

I have to have iDesign due to my eyes; but can have LASEK or LASIK.

LASIK has a quicker recovery period.

Not everyone can have LASIK tho.

I’ve heard SMILE is less invasive and potentially leads to less dry eye. Going to do some research

I had mine done about 12 years ago and honestly I wouldn’t even know what to do with a set of glasses now.

-3.5 and -2.4 (I think!) plus apparently scarring on the retina.

But all sortable and honestly for the slight discomfort for the first afternoon I’ve never looked back.

What sort of treatment did you have? How was the recovery period ?

I’m –9 in both eyes. Going to book a consultation soon but I’m expecting they will just laugh at me.

As long as your labrador doesn’t tell you that they’re smirking at you, you’ll be none the wiser.

Err…lasers shot into my eyes?

I honestly can’t remember, it was with Optical Express (I think!) at the Trafford Centre and it was whatever the eye doctor told me I needed. Looking at their website, LASIK and something else.

Recovery period wise, summarised:

Morning before: This is fine
Afternoon afterwards: OH GOD MY EYES (are really gritty - you’ll not be able to drive or anything)
Following three weeks: Which drop do I need to put in today?

Following ten years: This is fine

I went for laser assessment about 20 years ago but was not suitable due to the high loss of [something important] at the back of both eyes. Had cataract surgery [NHS funded at a private clinic] two years ago and already eyesight is deteriorating. R-
