When I look through my list of direct debits, the description at first glance is meaningless and so trying to work out what it is for can be quite unclear. I understand the description is set up by the company the DD is set up with, but it would be an idea to be able to have a user defined description, so you are then able to make more sense to them. Eg being able to label a DD as 'car insurance ’ which would be easier to understand than the name of some company you may not have heard of. Also if you pay for mobile phones for the family, and they are all with the same provider, they will all have the same description. Being able to label them as Son #1 phone, and son#2 phone would be useful

There’s no way to do this at the moment, prior to the payments being made.
Once they’ve been made, you can go into the transaction and edit the notes/#tags to something more meaningful. Then when you search later, all historical transactions may make more sense to your personal financial situation.
