I can tell you we are definitely not outsourcing our developer, governance and legal teams.
But to add to your point, our building security, catering, cleaning staff is already outsourced.
So I have a question you might not know the answer to, but if you could find out, I’d be grateful.
When Monzo reports average pay for staff etc, are these staff included because they work at Monzo, or excluded because they don’t work for Monzo?
Which is of course the question about outsourcing
There are plenty of valid reasons to outsource - for example should the engineering company I work for have to work out the best way to procure sausages in addition to our more core and specialist tasks?
However the more cynical (and maybe sometimes correct) view is that it also brings with it the way to shift pension burdens and mask salary disparities and the like
I just hope the push for this…
Doesn’t come at the demise of this…
Maybe this is me just being pessimistic but i hope it doesnt become a case of pushing the everyday customer to become a paid customer because monzo basic gets little to no attention/unfinished features.
I understand your concerns.
The Premium team has kept it clear that all existing features will be available for all - forever.
When it comes to developing new features they will have to assess the cost-benefit.
But the company really wants to keep its moto to “make banking work for everyone”… I’m hoping we will be able to keep that up
This is exactly where i see it getting potentially difficult and why i said i hope it doesnt seem as if monzo “push” people to the premium too heavily for core features.
For example, lets take cash deposits and cheque imaging as two examples.
Both could be argued that they are ways for people to hold more money in their monzo account so would pay for themselves.
Cash deposits however come at a cost to the customer already and perhaps if were being developed today would be a part of monzo plus.
Cheque imagining is another which unless is subsidised by business accounts could be a part of plus because its costly.
All hypothetical of course
but both things are offered for free by every other bank account so you can see why i have my initial fears around the future dilemmas in regards to what could be free/premium ![]()
Business accounts make money - well I suppose £5 pcm is worthwhile but business lending is inherently risky and capital intensive. Wonder where Monzo USA is on this priority list? I always thought expansion there before uk was profitable was stretching it.
Not spending money advertising on Instagram to your existing customers would be a good start.
They will be advertising to a group of Instagram I.e
18 to 30 year olds.
You may happen to be a part of that group and have Monzo. There is no way for Instagram to know that when Monzo purchases the ads
Actually there is…
Its called Custom Audiences
I dont know how you think that would work?
Monzo gives instagram a list of emails and says target this group except for those with emails registered on this list? (Surely not allowed)
Dont target people who have already like monzo on instagram? (Flawed)
I dont get how this could work other than how they do it at present
I have never seen a Monzo ad on any social media (except when they’ve posted their adverts), but I see a crap ton of Starling ads
. So I would assume they’re already including something in their target criteria to try and avoid current customers.
I guess perhaps it’s a bit trickier to work out who someone banks with compared to a lot of other services or products. I would assume that there are a limited number of data sources that Facebook can use to work out whether or not you are an existing Monzo customer.
I’ve heard from the marketing team before that Monzo ads won’t be shown to existing Monzo customers on Facebook. I guess there are always false-positives
I think there has been a reasonable amount of backlash on this comment.
I would love to hear from the community about suggestions on how we could sustain the business otherwise
.
Monzo wants to keep as many of it’s customers happy, so making sure they are in line with our business model is part of it.
Certainly true for me; I’m not on Facebook. ![]()

‘New Plus’ is the main key to this - done right of course. Despite having gone through the disastrous Plus v1, I’d be happy to pay for extended services which worked for me.
Whenever someone says Monzo Plus v1 - I think about the “Shame” scene from Game of Thrones
But this time we’ll be on the Iron Throne!
The iron throne has been destroyed
Best not to aim for that
Personally I have no problem with the premium package leaning towards 3rd party integrations and add ons like:
- Tastecard
- Airport lounge access
- Travel insurance
- Virtual cards
- Metal cards
All these things are niche and rightly can make monzo money via either a fee or a percentage cut.
However i feel like things that will improve the average balance held in a monzo account shouldnt come at a cost:
- Cheque Imaging
- Cash Deposits (to a limit)
- Budgeting software (extended summary)
- Custom Categories
- Shared Pots
All these things will encourage people to use monzo as their primary account and allow them to earn more from interchange fees/savings pots fee/loans etc.
Especially summary and custom categories. I know personally i dont keep my full months disposable income in my main monzo balance because i find the budgeting at present to not really be good enough so i spread my money more to help budget. If it was id have a higher average balance in my main balance
