iOS or Android?

iOS or Android?
You could argue it’s not essential for any app whatsoever…
I think it is to be expected from an app nowadays if anything.
It’s a shame it’s taking so long, especially as it was an iOS feature 2 years ago, probably longer for android.
iPhone users letting me down again… God damn you all
at least it’ll be here
Thanks for the update, it’s most appreciated
The better OS, obvs.

Oh the irony…
Wouldn’t this be an ideal time to offer dark mode as a Monzo Labs option for Android to allow for feedback from those interested here? Then when the time is right for a joint launch the feature would be more polished.
Keeps us pesky lot happy and provides plenty of feedback. Sounds like a win all around
As an iOS user, I think this would make a lot of sense.
Even better if you also add the option for iOS to enable the messy alpha-stage dark mode there too.
Adding it for one OS over the other would just generate resentment, just based on the past few years on here! The number of topics about disparity, oy!
That said, a Dark Mode on Monzo Labs with the understanding it’s very much not finished would make sense. Those people who want it get it, the rest of us who don’t care too much can wait for the proper implementation instead (or just not bother).
As an iOS user, I am quite content to put forward Android users to be experimented on.
I’d go with this, turn it on in Labs, let (
) people choose to use it and give valuable early feedback. Then launch to all once it is as polished as can be.
Speaking on behalf of all Android users - we’ll be happy to take one for the team ![]()
I mean we already have functions which iPhone can do over Android and vice versa. 1 more extra thing that throws it out of kilter won’t harm it
Yes, it might annoy the parity people a bit, but then again it makes no sense to hobble one platform for the sake of the other.
Thanks for the update. Hopefully this will stop people bleating on about the lack of dark mode for a bit.
It does raise a point though. A lack of visibility of a strategic roadmap.
Two things I really admire about Monzo is honesty and transparency.
Not to wade in where it isn’t my place (I don’t work for Monzo and therefore have no special insight into their plans), but this has come up before.
Monzo have put on record, previously, that they are unwilling to return to having a public roadmap as they had in the past. The stated reasons for this were that plans can change very quickly; as such it’s difficult to produce an accurate roadmap, and also people get annoyed when an anticipated date is “missed” and this creates a problem for Monzo. Often this is not anybody’s particular fault, as it can be difficult to accurately estimate when a particular feature might be finished.
Additionally, now that they are a larger fully-regulated bank, Monzo necessarily have to make changes more slowly, and they are worried that a public roadmap might give competitors a chance to get ahead on new features and come out with them first.
So for all these reasons, even though it is something many of us would like (myself very much included) it is unlikely that we will see advance plans being extensively shared again.
To make up for this, Monzo staff have been trying to engage with the community more recently after announcements have been made - so the community feel and input into features is still there.
I don’t disagree with many of the points that you make. It is a different kind of roadmap needed when a company has matured from a startup. They moved away from the Trello board and brought in app the Making Monzo section (not sure if that still exists, if so I can’t find it) which was good because it didn’t promise timescales (which a roadmap shouldn’t) but gave an indication of what was and wasn’t planned for future activity.
But I don’t want to derail this thread about dark mode into a roadmap discussion or @Peter_G will come and shut it down
I’m closing this thread now…

Seriously, if anyone is worried about going off topic, just DM one of the Coral Crew and we can spin off if relevant. Or feel free to start one yourself.
They mentioned the recent iOS performance issues as a reason for the delayed roll out of the new feed tabs.
That could be one reason why they’re also behind on this ![]()
If I’m not wrong Android is ahead because Dark Mode happened to be a side project of one of the Android engineers.
As you may know, Monzo in the past has fallen for the trap of delivering “cool features” for the sake of engagement, even though they had to strategic significance. The company is more mature now, specially with the pressure of becoming profitable.
Arguably Dark Mode is one of those “cool features”. So, if you’re an investor, be happy that Dark Mode isn’t out yet, because it probably means we’re making big bucks somewhere else
