There were actually several weeks in the last few months where we surpassed 60k signups a week.
If folks weren’t complaining back then that the listed number was inaccurate as the real figure was higher, then I see no reason to point out that it’s also sometimes lower. We cut back on advertising and we stopped referrals. Both of those things will happen again and when they do you’ll see another uptick.
There are standard ways in which people can advertise things like this (customer numbers, sales volumes, sales rankings etc etc) and its generally based on a stated X week average from Y Period of time (or similar).
In the realms of substantiating a claim, I wouldn’t expect that this figure is 100% accurate for each and every single week, but averaged across a year it would be - and Monzo should (hopefully) have the data to demonstrate it.
There’s also a factor in how long the data they gather for the claim is valid for, so hopefully Monzo will continue to crunch the numbers at a Defined Frequency, to show the data is still up to date, or eventually pull the figure when they determine it is a no longer accurate claim.
If you have concern, I’d suggest complaining To the ASA, and if it merits complaint they will sort it.
This link makes it easy to work out by checking the Accounts per week and turning it to 12 months, 6 months, 3 months (or whatever).
Last 12 months: Average 41.4k accounts per week.
Last 6 months: Average 53.3k accounts per week.
Last 3 months: Average 46.8k accounts per week.
Because it has fluctuated over the last 6 months above (65.8k p/w) and below (19.3k p/w) the 6 month figure make the website accurate within a margin of error imho.
I like seeing these numbers and, just like I do with every other business who publish such stats, I take them with a pinch of salt and presume they are not specifically accurate but an estimate.
The only way you’ll truly show this is to publish the numbers exactly. Last week we had 49,873 new accounts created. (and we all know that’ll just lead to ‘yeah but how many are still active?’ discussion).
Oh wait, if you scroll down on the webpage there is a number that is dynamically updated… are we just ignore that too now??
down to “only” 40,000 / week now - question is , is this the end for Monzo ? will they ever survive with customer sign-up numbers dropping so low ? ( tongue in cheek ) I will be the first to complain for lack of transparency and inaccuracy should the sign up total counter now move over 40,000 / week
