Contactless over £30

I’d much prefer that system in the UK!

@ntaylor3 this also works in the UK. I’ve used it a few times in the past. It’s just not advertised and probably not setup correctly at every merchant.

Used contactless in Brussels twice, wasn’t asked to use chip and pin I think. But both transactions were less than €15. Also used an international visa credit card for over €15 and it had to be inserted (no need for pin) for it to work.

Without the pin, “chip and dip”

Comprehensive list here on which stores accept payments of over £30 with Apple Pay http://contactless.life/retailers/

I’ve been using Apple Pay with Starling comprehensively for the last 6 months. My wallet hasn’t left the house in that time. I can confirm Sainsbury’s definitely allow for purchases over £30. Tesco also do but you must do it via their Tesco+ app rather than Apple Pay ( basically works the same). Tesco are in the process of updating their pay at pump stations so they too will accept contactless payments via pay at pump.

It’s the future people.

You sure? As in if I hold my phone to a Tesco terminal it will bring up the Tesco+ app instead of Apple wallet? I was under the impression that I would need to open the Tesco app first which adds quite a lot of friction.
Happy to be corrected though if that’s not the case

It’s a horrible QR-code based system if I remember right. Don’t use it, it’s garbage and also works as a “loyalty” card to compromise your privacy.

The Tesco Clubcard automatically pops up in notification centre for me but doesn’t open Tesco Pay, so I still default to using the digital Clubcard + Monzo card.

You have to register your card on the Tesco pay app and yes then open the app for it to be scanned at the till when you are paying.

Again this is only for purchases over £30. You can use Apple Pay for anything up to £30. Asda the same but they don’t have an app so spending over £30 there isn’t even an option.

Do you just bring and use your card for purchases over £30 in Tesco or do you have another way round this that I’m missing? Maybe you dont shop in Tesco.

Yeah it’s the latter. I very rarely shop for anything over 30£ so I’m not affected by it, but if this limitation was affecting me I’d just use my card or go somewhere else.

Your Tesco club card will be added to your wallet and show up beside your Monzo card - but it’s just for scanning points and can’t be used to pay.

Which is even worse. At least they could make the Apple Pay “clubcard” an actual payment card and restrict CDCVM (the magic that allows Apple & Google Pay to authorise above 30£) only to that card.

Yeah agree totally. You know what you’re talking about - how do you find Monzo’s functionality?

It’s a standard, not limited to Monzo, and the specification is even publicly available I believe. Search for “CDCVM” around here or on Google, you’ll find more about it! :+1:t2:

For someone who is clearly all over this stuff, how do you find or rate using Monzo? Slick? Frustrating?

It’s lovely, does exactly what I want, gets out of my way, no legacy rust and the company’s mindset is excellent. What else can you ask for?

True. I get what you’re saying. For someone clearly frustrated by the Tesco set up - as I am - i was curious if you had any frustrations with Monzo.

The Tesco situation will resolve itself eventually - this scenario has happened before. CurrentC is now dead and those merchants are accepting Apple Pay without any problems.

In the meantime, do you not carry your card? I love Apple Pay but I still carry my wallet just in case (which also contains a backup credit card).

No I’ve moved away from carrying a wallet completely. I’ve done so for the last 6 months using Apple Pay on Starling and have had no issues whatsoever.

I’m pretty savvy and organised so get why this might not be an option for everyone. It’s very freeing for me.

Just moved to Monzo as they now offer Apple Pay and it looked like they were ahead of the game and more my thing - the jury is still out…
