Connected Accounts: What next? (Summer 2022 edition)

Urgh, yes their API docs are clear as mud.

Are you Virgin Money (05), or Virgin Money (08), or Virgin Money (82)?

Which is confusing flow for end users if they need to pick between Virgin Money and Virgin Money connections, when they only ever have one of the two.

Luckily 05 (former Yorkshire) and 82 (former Clydesdale) use the same login page and API, so there is only that API and the other savings/credit card one to implement - not three.

The user might have to connect three times if they have both Clydesdale and Yorkshire accounts, plus a credit card, though. Four times if they have all of those and a legacy savings account!

PS: I mentioned all their apps earlier - the other problem is that the old platform savings accounts don’t have an app at all! That shows how important Open Banking is in this case, as a way to check your balance easily.

Aaargh!! Just switched my HSBC account and lost all the transactions as I cannot renew the access… so frustrating :rage: … really wish Monzo would sort this out …

How is that a Monzo issue? You closed an account but you want to keep the data?

If it’s already in imported into Monzo then I would :hushed:

I can’t think of an aggregator that doesn’t let you keep the history.

Emma, Lumio all do that. It’s logical (and desirable) for that to be the case in Monzo, too.

Monzo already have 2 years worth of transaction data… So it’s logical to expect that they would make it available… Losing access to transaction data reduces the usefulness of trends considerably …

Sounds like Monzo get the data live and E**a and Lumio get it and keep it. Interesting contrasts.

I can’t speak for Emma but in the case of Lumio (Great app by the way if you don’t have Monzo) you can mark an account as closed. So it keeps the data that it had, and any other accounts work the same as Monzo whereby it’s live and requires access every 90 days.

It’s not without its flaws though. It will keep telling you that you need to renew access (which obviously you can’t) and if you remove it, the data is gone too.

I’d be very surprised if Monzo weren’t also keeping it locally otherwise it would be slow and you wouldn’t be able to set categories or save notes.

(By locally I mean on Monzo’s infrastructure not on our devices)

They all get the data “live” from the open banking APIs and store it in their own platforms.

The only difference is that Monzo deletes it all (or hides it from view) when that account is disconnected but the others don’t.

Poor, considering one of Mondo’s very first founding ethe (plural of ethos) was that your banking data was yours and should be exportable forever from bank to bank.

Im sure I read that the need for six monthly access renewal was going to be dropped…

This is the downside of trying to be a “Jack of all Trades” - While I think Trends is great, there’s a reason separate aggregator apps still exists

To be fair, I’m pretty sure that it’s something that the team would want to do. Unless they’ve been legaled by their legals.

…by their eagles, surely?

Are there still issues connecting NewDay cards? It’s been like this for over 24 hours now.

So how did I do?

:x:

Summer’s not over. But this looks like a fail. Especially as all of the New Day connections are still in Labs and Nationwide and some existing connections are all flaky.

:white_check_mark:
This happened!

:white_check_mark: (Kinda)
We have notes. No tags. No search.

:x:

I was right to go with low. It’s not a thing…

… Yet. I suspect it’s on its way. (Although look at the track record of my predictions - it ain’t good :joy:)

We got it! Targets Budgeting is live across connected accounts. And jolly good is it, too!

Big personal fail on mortgages! They are a thing! Monzo - carry on proving me wrong (in a good way).

(looks at watch still no Monzo investment account though :eyes:)

2023 poll coming :soon:
