Someone in part 1 of the thread mentioned seeing the Payz Mastercard online but I don’t think anyone ever applied for it or never posted it anyway. Well I got one today! Actually two - not mentioned there is the Payz Plus card, a bit of an oddity as (AFAIK) the UK’s only Discover/Diner’s Club card.
Packaging was identical for both cards.
Annoyingly my Payz Plus card arrived pre-scratched all over , there’s also a noticeable plastic stress mark behind where the chip is. Other than that, it’s a sleek design, bit boring though. The “payz.” on the front is a silver reflective film.
Here’s the Mastercard. Is this the first card with the “shark tooth” Prepaid notch? Also odd decision to use the very ugly “color Mastercard logo” hologram which only looks right at an angle - I think the same as the one on the Starling card? The text formatting is also extremely inconsistent between the two cards which bugs me. In the pictures it blends in with the shadow, but both cards have a black plastic core rather than the usual white.
I took the risk (their reviews aren’t the best. Although I think some are using Payz as a gambling ewallet?) because, besides the cool cards, I noticed they’re currently running an unbeatable 2% cashback offer on the Payz Plus Discover card, and also waiving the usual £10 card order fee. No Google Wallet support, (don’t think it has Apple Pay either), so using the virtual card in the meantime is a no-go for in-person, and I don’t do that much online spend.
Also Curve takes Discover, so until now I’ve sidestepped the acceptance problem, and also attempted to max out my cashback, by running all my purchases through the Curve+Zilch pairing - maybe that’ll mean it’s excluded for cashback as a financial service? I’ll see on the 10th Feb when it’s meant to credit, it doesn’t seem to track it on the website or app (or it does and all my purchases so far are excluded, I hope not!). On that topic as far as I can tell you can do everything in Payz without a smartphone which is a refreshing change from most fintechs.
So far though no problems, other than a random decline the other day (a concert selling merch with Square readers, although again could be a Curve or Zilch issue, they both seem to decrease the chance of payments working right. Didn’t try again cause I didn’t want to hold up the line) edit: that’s cause I bought dinner earlier and didn’t have enough funds . Also the deposits are not instant, first time it took 40 minutes or so and the second time was near the end of the day and didn’t clear until the next so seems to only process during business hours.
I will also note deposits by bank are free (right now anyway), although there is a £1 fee to withdraw/send money to other bank accounts, so don’t put money in you don’t want to spend.
