It’s about implementation though. Microsoft placed the annoying paper clip everywhere in office applications
Google Calendar is a good example where subtle images make a nicer experience

My comment was more of a joke than an actual comment 
you say said no-one ever… but i miss clippy. As a help tool it was useless but it livened up an otherwise boring time sat on Excel doing homework…
