Cashless society - when?

Actually even Barrow has a taxi app now - UBARO.

Claims you can pay by cash, card, apple pay, google pay.

Says that it was ‘created by Barrovians for the people of Barrow and it’s surrounding area, UBARO is here to provide you with a faster, slicker and more convenient way to book a taxi’.

Of course, I’ve no idea how reliable the taxis are booked through it - it’s no good having a nice shiny app if there’s never any taxi’s available on it.

It’s the 5p toll bridge at Swinford I’m worried about.

Love it! - you went with LMGTFY (which is a great back-hander), but you could have also gone for deep impact

Aah yes, that’ll be Apple taxis! How they haven’t been done for copyright theft on their logo yet I’ll never know!

Not only Apple Inc’s logo, but if you look closely… that plane swoosh looks awfully like the Nike logo

Seriously though, even little Exeter is getting there in terms of being entirely cash free… the buses even take contactless now, only place I can think that doesn’t take card is the sandwich shop down the alley by boots (they do make great sandwiches though!)

The cashless society won’t happen until everyone even trades people & builders take contactless even if it’s for 1p and without long faces from payees.

I think the long faces is optional…

Let’s see what the new Chancellor comes up with (I won’t hold my breath).

Hopefully he comes up with nothing and it finally puts the nail in the coffin for cash

I sincerely hope not. Cash is still very important for many people.

I don’t hold any particular love for cash, but I can agree that we are sleepwalking into a cashless society.

Some thought for the impact this might have on vulnerable members of society, how we might cope with massive tech failure, and whatever else we should be considering seems wise.

Why is it important for them? Are they unable to use cards? I don’t believe so

Give a potential impact on them and we can discuss it - I personally don’t believe there is any

The same way everyone does. Multiple backups across different regions.

We also need to think of processes that would allow people to recoup funds later - for instance noting down details when failure to pay occurs (for example Visa is down and there is no cash). ID would be required of course

Also posted on FTT, (my opinion for what it’s worth)

I think it is purely a matter of choice.

Whilst personally, I am about as cashless as I can be, I think it should be a personal choice, and not one imposed on us by either big business, the banks or the government.
People should be allowed to spend their money in which ever way suits them.

Yes, I agree that minimum spend limits should be outlawed, but businesses should also have the choice to decide whether they want to be cashless, cash only, or both.

The argument that businesses deciding to be cashless or cash only is excluding people doesn’t wash with me.
There are always alternatives to suit.

Why is what other people do important to you?

Why is it important to you what I ask? You don’t have to answer it

And in case anyone misses the ultimate point.

Yes. Some people don’t even have bank accounts and rely on cash from jobs to live on.
