Can anyone recommend an estate agent (London area) that isn't dreadful?

I’ve already ruled out Foxtons (and Dexters, which is basically the new Foxtons).

It’s a no from me.

(sorry)

I’m not sure such a thing exists.

Depends where you are really. We have a couple of local independent operators, some more established than the others. Just sold our place with one of the new ones (started by a guy who had been working for an older chain) - we went with him because he knocked a bit off the commission, but made it back for himself by squeezing a bit more out the buyers.

Bigger chains tend to push buyers towards their own mortgage brokers or conveyancing companies, which isn’t necessarily in the interests of anyone but themselves. (I think it was one of these related conveyancers further down the chain that nearly sunk the whole transaction for us last week).

Thanks. Primrose Hill (small 1 bed). When I bought, the agent was Knight Frank - and they seemed OK, but I’ve never had any experiencing selling a flat. I kind of regret buying when I did, was keen to get on the ladder, but would have been better off renting a few more years…

What’s the reason you don’t like Foxtons or Dexters? Might be able to understand what you’re looking for (or not).

I’ve used Foxtons and been pretty happy with them in the past.

Don’t know if it’s justified or not, but they have a bit of a reputation for overvaluing the property, and then aggressively pushing you into selling for less. They will essentially say anything to either side of the party to get the sale, and that can cause all sorts of problems later on during the transaction.

I guess I’m just looking for one that’s going to set a realistic price from the start, not be too pushy when there’s an offer etc, and be more collaborative and trustworthy.

No idea what they’re like but I believe Hotblack Desiato cover that area.

Such a fabulous name that Douglas Adams nicked it for a Hitch Hiker’s Guide character - might be r*bbish as an actual estate agency though!

Good luck with your move, hope it goes well.
