ATM (fees)

Thanks Tim.

We introduced ATM fees abroad because a small handful of users were responsible for the majority of the costs. Rather than charging everybody, we give a £200 allowance in a rolling 30-day period. In my opinion this is fair and works well for customers. It’s unlikely we’ll get rid of it.

Ultimately I don’t think keeping cash withdrawals free abroad is a scalable or sustainable model for any bank. I guess we will see how it pans out.

Do those small handful of users that were responsible for the majority of the costs still use Monzo?

I don’t have the figures on that, but I suspect the answer is ‘yes’, even if they have started doing their ATM withdrawals on another card.

We hit 600,000 current accounts today (we were 500,000 on 18th March) so our user growth is phenomenal!

It would be good to know actually as I reckon a lot jumped ship as soon as the fees came in.
