I never saw it as a travel card, I saw phrases saying a new kind of bank etc never once got impression they were a travel card. Even if so, if you got all your cake for free forever, where does the baker get the ingredients for the next bake or keep up with the rent.
Common sense here, you want them to just keep paying out transaction fees for you to abuse the free £200 a month? You’re one of the reason the charges are having to be set at 3%
I think Starling Bank will have to introduce fees eventually for the same reasons as Monzo - a few people will abuse fee-free ATM withdra\wals to the detriment of everyone else. It’s a huge pity because the major drivers are towards cashless payments via smartphone apps and contactless cards. A recent report on the UK’s use of cash stated that, based on current trends, around 79% of all transactions would be cashless by 2020, but IMHO, the sooner we can eliminate cash the better.
N26 - I’d love an N26 account but they are not available to people domiciled in the UK.
Looking at this as an investor in monzo, we appear to have found a filter to remove the freeloaders potentially non-profitable customers as we go forwards.
Hmmm I am pretty much a nomad at the moment so don’t know where it can be sent to haha.
I’m just curious though, why wasn’t it detailed that it would be in fact one £200 cash withdrawal abroad a month? It’s not a big deal at the end of the day, I understand the situation at hand. It’s just a slight inconvenience…
Honestly I first heard about Monzo from some friends who used it while travelling, they gave me a golden ticket think it was. I got sent a card, I never really checked their webpage. The way it was described was just by the no atm fees, that was the only feature that made it look any different from any other bank and with the limits etc I thought it must just be a travel card. The new bank stuff I thought meant the no atm fees as nothing else they do looks any different, the app may be a bit better designed but not really a major break through.
I thought the costs were covered by having small staff and no branches.
If I am offered a free £200 a month it seems silly not to use it, I will still use it for some foreign point of sales as well. If it had no atm fees full time I could think about changing over my full account but as it doeskin, their doesn’t seem much point in moving.
The only thing people seem to be saying it has for it is the app.
I understand I could be one of the users which has made Monzo change I didnt really know much about Monzo till I got the email today.
They are - you just need to have an address in Germany to have the card delivered to. On signup they do not (or certainly didn’t) request your residential address, just an address the card can be delivered to.
They know i am a UK tax resident, but touch wood they haven’t complained.
I’d like to think that Monzo has a decent community where people are respectful to each other when expressing different points of view, even when they’re not in agreement with each other, and refrain from calling others names.
If you read my original post, I was talking about businesses in general and not yours. I clarified this for you at the time. I never said you had to use one and I did not call you names. I gave a point of view on a subject.
Not impressed with the decision to introduce excessive 3% ATM charges for using a foreign machine. Most UK banks don’t charge anything near this rate and this will be pressing me to seek alternative card providers or to revert back to taking cash abroad for better rates.
I have already incurred a 5% charge for using an ATM in Turkey therefore it was quite misleading to have been led to believe that Monzo card use would not result in ATM charges. However, I was generally quite satisfied up to this point and had recommended the card to a number of acquaintances.
I look at it this way - I’m going on holiday… I buy some Euros before I go. If I run short and need to withdraw cash from an ATM, I know I have £200 worth I can withdraw without charge. Just a bit of pre- planning is all that is needed. Other than cash, I’ll use my card and that won’t cost me anything either. Simple!
Europes fine as most things take card. Its when you go outside Europe it stops working. Just been in Myanmar, Nepal and Laos you arnt going to be able to use card anywhere their even for Hotels, so £200 does nothing. I do get why that have done it, still a bit annoying. Would have preferred the 1%/2%
Monzo were always up front that they wouldn’t charge any fees. They never said anything about swallowing fees that other banks charged for the use of the machines.
Can do yes. But not really advised to carry a months load of cash around. For small 1/2 weeks holidays its fine.
I do understand I am in the minority here, I just think 200 a month is not really helping anyone.
The fees discussed here don’t come into effect until 18th December 2017, so no charges will be applied on our side for withdrawing cash from ATMs abroad until then
Some of us do NOT want the hassle and cost of going to book foreign currency in advance of a trip from an exchange bureau which is so last century. We expect with a bank account to withdraw cash from ATMs be they in Belfast or Berlin, Manchester or Munich. So your comment to plan ahead falls flat as far as I am concerned.
If Monzo charge me 1% for taking cash out in Europe fair enough but 3% is a joke and people will look elsewhere. Some say use another account to withdraw cash abroad but Monzo for the rest. Well if I am going to use another account to withdraw cash abroad why not use that for all the rest. As far as I see it for overcharging me for a couple of EU ATM withdrawals each year Monzo can lose a customer’s monthly salary, overdraft revenue and use of marketplace. Business I am sure competitors will be happy to take.
I think people need to remember that Monzo is a UK Current Account. It is not a Foreign Currency Travel Account. Why should Monzo incur the cost because people choose to use the card for cash withdrawals outside of the UK. If a foreign travel card is needed then there are loads to choose from.
