A better way to budget is here šŸŽÆ

Woo, I got it, very nice. Just need to be able to budget for the categories now and can leave summary alone.

I got it yesterday so I 100% think this is what has happened

I’m still not sure how I feel about this theory gaining currency. :joy:

The naughty list is also known as the cool kids list as well so its not too bad :+1:

Judge me as naughty or nice - not bovverd which - but I ain’t on the list for receiving the ā€˜Target’ pill yet… :man_shrugging:

Should categories excluded from Spending and Targets be the same? I got a bit confused when I went into a transaction via the Targets screen and set it not to be included in spending, but this didn’t alter targets? I then went through the targets flow again and was able to exclude it that way.

I have trends!!

Going to give this a proper study tomorrow. As you all know I’m a budgeting-in-Monzo cynic.

My big questions I’m not certain of right now are:

  • can it do joint accounts (see also, plus/premium categories in joint accounts please)
  • how does it handle savings goals?
  • how does it handle accrual of dosh to fund bigger spends (etc)

Ultimately, can it be my YNAB replacement.

Cynical report will follow,

Will there be an option for different budget periods like summary currently does? I used monthly budgeting for ages and found I always went over by 5-10% or so. Inevitably because a month quite a long time. And sometimes you end up playing quite a hard catch up in the final week to bring it back in line.

Since switching to weekly budgeting I’ve found I actually underspend by 5-10% over the month. And I feel I have more control.

I’m more than happy to still have monthly/ quarterly/ yearly Infograph’s. But consider this a vote for weekly budgets in trends!

This is a very interesting one. In theory, I should probably consider my Ā£50 into my ā€œcar potā€ as spent as this month, the amount I want to save will likely be zero because I’ve paid for my car insurance. In reality, I haven’t overspent this month, it just looks like it from a top level view.

I classify things like this as savings when they go into the pot, then savings as they come out (meaning it nets off and is excluded from Trends). Another excluded category (or transfers) would also work?

Everyone should have access now :crossed_fingers:

Personally I would like this to include EVERYTHING. What is the net result of my Monzo account for this period. Whether I have sent Ā£50 to my joint account or Ā£50 to the RSPCA, I have spent it. I understand why transfers are excluded by default, but I’d like to be able to include them for this purpose.

Got this and I have to say I don’t see the point.

In some ways it’s really simple, you tell it your accounts and what to include/not and it tells you what to spend on a trend to help achieve that.

But that’s not really useful to me personally. My bills are my bills and unless I can see that a certain category is up or down it’s hard to take any meaningful actions.

Also, what if at the beginning of the month you have a (planned for) large expense. Unless you go in and exclude it, you’ll be constantly chasing your tail.

It feels like keeping the trends line and merging in individual budgets into that would’ve been a better result, for me anyway.

Also, the use of what looks like a burndown chart to me is an interesting one but unless you know what one is and how to read it, people may take the wrong actions and even get sad about how they are tracking.

Some instructions on how to use this would be great.

Looking forward to seeing it evolve but it’s not currently something I would want to use.

It arrived.

The splash screens during set-up explain it well enough?:

Seems to explain it to me anyway.

And once triggered, it makes our progress look very predictable!:

(The ā€˜yellow zone’ shaded area isn’t very yellow in Dark Mode)

Yes true, for the one time you see them. But I agree that does explain things further.

Looks great in your example so perhaps it’s a case of fully using it to understand its potential.

I have access now. Obviously very glad to see some sort of budgeting start to come back since moving to Trends and therefore losing Summary, but really hope that this is improved/iterated upon in later updates.

Definitely agree with an overall budget, but I would like individual budgets underneath too (as was the case with the old Summary). There are certain categories which I actively want to keep a closer eye on, and I think setting individual targets/budgets for those would be helpful.

If you tap on ā€˜More’, to the right of the ā€˜xx% left of Ā£yyy target’, you get a word-based summary with a nice ā€˜daily’ estimated spend, plus a quick monthly saving summary:

Very polished :+1:

Will be using Monzo for spending over the next couple of months to test this all out. Starling :nest_with_eggs: and Monzo :monzoo: are smashing it at the end of this year!
