Will Monzo Continue To Offer Free ATM Withdrawals Outside the UK?

I cannot make it my main card as it not accepted in some place. I use it far more than I thought I would. I think once Im offered the debit card I would certainly be using it full time.

A regular user could be someone that’s main card is Monzo or they use it a few times a week over a few months.

I think you should and then after a pre determined spend/time you either get refunded or an even better rate on your next trip.

Unlocking is a bit ā€˜gamey’ to me but yeah maybe

Given that this will be a Current Account, card usage is not the thing to measure since not everyone uses a CA as a card heavy platform in the same way.

I actually think everyone should be treated in the same way. ā€˜Regular use’ is just too subjective a thing to define. Personally I find rewards for some users at the expense of others to be divisive and counter productive and also difficult to run. I’m sure we can all pick schemes that favour ā€˜our’ particular methods of use as ā€˜normal’ but there’s always someone who will be excluded as a result.

Pick a charging scheme, apply it to everyone and stick to it.

I don’t agree. Why should they be charged? Monzo was very strongly pushed as a prepaid travel card, free of roaming transaction charges. So why should they be charged? The error Monzo perhaps made was not including a fair usage policy on these from the outset.

I got a Monzo for using on holiday, and enjoyed it so much I had every intention of using it when I got home too, so the advertising/promotion and, to be fair, general experience of using the card worked.

However, as a prepaid card it just doesn’t offer the functionality that allows me to use this as my sole account yet. In particular the inability to withdraw your funds straight to your legacy account, should you need it in a hurry (or if indeed, the Monzo network goes down - which it has done various times since I joined).

This isn’t a Monzo-bash by any means, I am excited to see what full-fledged CAs will bring and look forward to perhaps making the full switch when this happens (dependant on the roaming fees introduced).

But to say users should be charged for something that they were offered as a ā€œlureā€ in the first place is misleading and unfair (unless being abused.)

To my knowledge Monzo have never pushed themselves as a prepaid travel card. That was just a byproduct of their Beta bank status. Other people seemed to have jumped to that conclusion and pushed it though.

Regardless, no business is ever constrained by history and pricing models change all the time. Let’s wait and see what they’re thinking about.

Who pushed it the free roaming charges? I don’t recall Monzo ever pushing it just the press etc.

We have pushed the no fees on purchases abroad. These will continue to be fee-free and use the Mastercard rate. It’s only ATMs that cost us here. :+1:

Not to deflect blame but I think it’s fair to say that we were highly recommended for travel by some sites because of this, rather than us pushing ourselves as a travel card.

It’s the very first question of the FAQ:

That would suggest it’s very clearly a USP to attract potential and new customers.

Because that’s how business works.

I’m a carpenter, I don’t buy a door from a merchants and give it to you.

Why should Monzo cover the costs and lose money? Do you want Monzo to fail?

If a business (Monzo) carries on losing money (fee free overseas ATM usage) then that company will go bust.

If you want to work for free, try it. Chances are you won’t last long paying bills with thin air.

lol how is that an advertisement/hook/push/lure??

That is simply an answer to a question, if it was like this then I would say it was the above

https://www.metrobankonline.co.uk/bank-accounts/i-want-some-information-about/using-my-card-abroad/

That would suggest it’s an answer to a frequently asked question.

If it were a full page ad in a national newspaper, that would be a push to lure customers in, on a FAQ page buried on a website, not so much.

What about…dont charge people who go through the switch service. They are serious about using Monzo as a banking solution?

Example certain banks only offer perks if the person has ā€œat least three DD’sā€ set up or deposit over Ā£800 a month etc.

Just a thought.

In that case that would mean early adopters are out. All of my DDs are through Monzo now but as the CASS isn’t active yet I couldn’t use it.

Yeah I see what u saying…I think I just meant it would be easy to see who is serious and who is taking advantage of rates.

There’s my example for the ā€˜once you impose rules some people get left out’ post above… Yikes! It includes me!

To add some context, every post between Hugh’s post (which I’m replying to here) & this post* was originally created in reply to this update from the team today -

*technically there have been a few more replies since the merge, before I created this post but it’s near enough

If, prior to agreeing terms of work with you, you offered your services/supplies free as part of that deal then yes. Yes, I would expect not to have to pay for them.

Monzo are now negotiating this, which I’m not against, but what I am saying is that it’s a change to the original agreement and should be processed fairly. Which I’m sure it will.

The pre-paid product and current account are different. When you move to the current account, you will either accept the new terms and conditions or not.

The choice is yours.

Is there a reason for your hostility? Or is the forum not for debate and open conversation? It seems you want to try and smoother my discussion.

I’m aware of my choices, I don’t think there’s a need for flippancy.

Just airing my opinion to be honest. When a thread is >300 posts deep and going round in circles I guess frustration is high.
