But do the transactions from 2 days ago show on your Monzo account?
Just trying to understand why my account made 5 payments to the same merchant overnight
Sure, and thatâs reasonable â but it isnât because Monzoâs systems are too busy to handle transactions.
Do the transactions match with your in-store transactions, in terms of amount and frequency?
Canât understand how you can be so absolutely positive about Monzo systems. A number of banks have had well documented system issues and security breaches. They are obviously too busy to answer any phone calls and havenât even let me know by way of any media that they are investigating.
The transactions donât match any regular pattern of purchases. They are simply quantum transactions which I cant identify.
There is a Monzo status page (at https://monzo.statuspage.io) that is routinely updated in the event of any operational issues. Iâm definitely not claiming that there havenât been any issues â there have! â but that these are well-documented, and youâd see much more about it on the forum if there were any widespread issues with transaction processing.
Your frustrations with the customer service response notwithstanding, youâll appreciate that these are entirely different systems/teams/processes.
Hope you get to the bottom of it!
Are the payments all for the same amount/time? R-
Because if it was all Monzo, it wouldnât just be you having these problems.
Itâs far more likely itâs the merchant, despite what they are telling you. They might not even know, if they had card machine issues, theyâve batch caught up or something.
Did you actually buy the things youâve been charged for? However long ago?
You card is frozen, so itâs safe - relax, have a coffee then continue with your day. When Monzo have finished investigating the cause theyâll get back to you
Thanks for that. Just had a look at that status page and they say everything is rosy in the garden. Spoken to the merchant again and he has just had another similar complaint from a customer and explained to this customer that Monzo are responsible for the issues and he seems to be aware of it.
Thanks for that, had a coffee and off to work now.
Even though itâs not off to the best of starts, I hope the rest of your day goes well!
Cheers, I will update this thread as and when. Thanks again
To be honest I think it is highly unlikely that Monzo are the cause of the issue. They will however probably be able to help you find out where and why the problem occurred.
In my opinion (more than happy to be proved wrong ) It is far more likely that there was a delay in processing transactions due to something holding them up either in the card machine itself (e.g. it didnât have a network connection so stored up all the transactions and processed them much later once it got back online - this could have been days of delay) or something happened in the card processing network that this particular merchant uses.
From what I understand (someone who knows more please feel free to chip in here ), Monzo systems are built to process everything in almost real-time (unlike most legacy / traditional banks) so as soon as a card transaction hits Monzo it is processed rather that any batching or other delays. Also, I am struggling to see how Monzo could initiate extra transactions to be paid to the merchant. I believe this would have to be initiated at the merchant end.
If I was in your position, I would check if the amounts of the transaction make sense. i.e. did you make purchases or those amounts but maybe a number of days ago? Can you remember what day you last went into the shop? Can you see the expected transactions on that day?
Good luck and keep us posted! Very interested to see how this is resolved
Was this other customer also using a monzo card?
What people mean by offline is that sometimes transactions are processed locally on the machine when there is no internet connection at that time, and then at some point they connect and send the details over to the merchants Bank to collect the money from monzo.
Do you normally pay contactless, and do you remember a few times that you had to use chip and pin for it to go through?
Used in stores can be offline. We donât mean buying something on the internet. An âoffline paymentâ is a specific term relating to how the merchant processes your in store payment.
How does the merchant know Monzo is responsible for the issue if the merchant is the only common factor?
Ah the old âblame Monzoâ trick
Since I got :mondo: a couple of years back it has become clear quite how much of the financial system is held together with old string and sellotape, and lots of merchants seem even worse
With a few notable exceptions I see a whole host of oddities (Netflix and Uber seem to have modern and responsive payment systems, while Amazon seems a bit arcane though robust and permissive)
Iâm reminded of the Kitty Cafe in Leeds who clearly did something strange with their payment systems, as they wouldnât work properly with Monzo (I understand that if someone paid with Monzo it would initially look like it worked, but eventually the transaction would refund back to the customer).
Naturally their solution at the time, instead of investigating and fixing their payment system, was to blame Monzo and ban customers from paying with Monzo cards.
(Whether anything has improved since then or Monzo customers are still banned, I donât know; used to go to Leeds once a year, but now itâs Harrogate instead.)
I may be overreading the tea leaves, but I have a feeling that Monzo customers may be overrepresented in the âgoing to cat cafesâ demographic, making this a dubious business decision
itâs just probably offline payments that took a couple of days to process and was done so over night at once, as you said youâve been to that shop regularly then it would be easy to tell if that money that came out was the ones youâve made previously by cross checking them, i did made a chip and pin purchase with a merchant before and the money did not even came out of my account until a week later, so this all could just be a misunderstanding that itâs fraudulent and could just be genuine transactions that you made thatâs just being processed now
