Recently had my Monzo card cloned but could have been a lot worse

Natwest definitely do this and it’s quite annoying as they seem to allow only around 10 contactless transactions before requiring the PIN. I got into the habit of regularly doing a PIN transaction even when I didn’t need to so that I wasn’t surprised when it failed.

Monzo not asking for this, in combination with the instant notifications and so on, is one of the things I really like.

At self-checkout or a staffed register? Shops are more likely to disable it at self-checkout (reset the terminal after three failed chip reads to prevent fallback).

Is Natwest still doing offline contactless frequently? It’s a holdover from the offline contactless days. They can, and I’d argue should, check online to be sure the bank hasn’t had the card reported stolen - not force a contact transaction (the reason for that is to reset the offline risk counters, which can’t be done on contactless as scripting isn’t supported).

Self checkout, I only use staffed checkouts if I really have to…

No idea I’m afraid… I almost never use my Natwest card these days.

Interesting, though that said, remember that, from my understanding, issuers are liable for fallback fraud since they knew it was fallback and still approved it.

No worries, I’d not be surprised if things have changed recently, especially if it is a Visa (all Visa contactless should be online now).

I’m assuming that that’s only for newly issued cards? I’m almost certain my barclaycard still does offline contactless in all instances (it approves much too quickly for it to be online).

I’m not sure, I know Visa introduced a zero contactless floor limit policy to the UK, but I’m not sure details of it. I’d have thought all cards?

Online can be very fast on fast terminals (1-2 seconds). Never quite as instant as offline, though.

On the flip side, I had fraud for the first time on any of my accounts yesterday. With Santander though. And I haven’t really used it in months since the CA preview.

They text me within three minutes to ask if the transaction was mine. Less than £10 went through (two quick transactions in succession) and two more declined while I was on the phone.

I was impressed with the catching of the fraud, but not so much the call I had to make. If it was not convenient at that time to make a call I would not have had further transactions declined. 🤷 I was on hold for around 7 minutes. Who knows how much could have been charged in that time.

Odd, did they say that? Once they’ve determined they think a transaction is fraud usually the account gets blocked. Not always, sometimes only an entry method (say, online or magstripe) gets blocked, but still.

One they text about didn’t go through, but others did. (already refunded including the international charge fee)

The first was blocked and then I’m not sure how they decided after that. Two of I believe four transactions went through.

I have never used my card. Just wanted to save some money. The only thing I done was attach it to a Apcoa connect (car parking app). Immediately, I checked my Monzo account and Great Western Railway has taken money from the card! Please be careful how you share your details!

What reason did Apcoa/Great Western give you for the charge to your card?

Have they not just done some sort of card validation check for a small amount?
