Pot as overdraft

Move your money from Pots to main account, no charges then provided you cover the overdraft.

I’ve had to, but I shouldn’t have to is kind of the point.

Of course you do; you’re borrowing the banks money.

One bank (Starling) allows a free ride in this format.

You borrow, you pay for the pleasure.

I don’t see it as borrowing the bank’s money, they have the money, in a pot, which isn’t a separate account. But it’s in Monzo’s interest to see it as separate.

Starling is a good alternative for those it bothers.

Being able to use the safety net pot as an overdraft would be a great feature. Especially for joint accounts which don’t have an option for an overdraft.

It’s not a charity and it’s obvious that it’s designed this way to make Monzo more money

With any highstreet bank, if I go into overdraft they charge my the fees no matter if I have money in a savings account with them

How is this any different? Because the app is nicer?

It’s the same thing because it’s using your own money before you borrow, which is how it should be.

Yes, but they usually give you savings accounts that are separate with account numbers and sort codes, Monzo doesn’t, that’s why I agree that it should be considered in the total account balance.

It just doesn’t feel like it’s making banking better for the user.

But as I and others said, there’s Starling for people who care about it. I’m not one of them

Because pots aren’t separate accounts. Money held in pots is money that is in the account which would be charged interest.

The argument has been done to death over many years and people have different views on which side is right.

My view is as stated above, Monzo takes the opposite view. It’s the way it is - other banks take the opposite approach.

I am a long time Monzo user, and my view is simply that one knows the product they’re signing up to when they join. How can one then claim it is unfair or unjust, or even predatory, when the account operates the way Monzo said it would when the main account goes overdrawn :person_shrugging:

This is why I chose not to go for the <16 pot/card/whatever. Because Monzo made it clear that if my child conducted an offline transaction that would take their own pot/account into debit, that debit would be deducted from my main account balance, whether or not there were sufficient funds in it, i.e. put me into unauthorised overdraft.

Simply went elsewhere for that product.

This situation is exactly the same. If a Monzo account will not perform as you want it to, open an account with an alternative provider who will.

Monzo will certainly not please everyone all of the time, nor will that be their aim.

These folk probably cry they buy a lottery ticket and didn’t win the jackpot.

For this to be a significant issue, serious enough to consider switching banks, you must be frequently dipping into your overdraft.

This is the core problem that needs to be addressed, rather than focusing on whether or not you should be paying for the privilege imo.
