does the USA accept monzo payments on card transactions and withdrawing cash

Hi

Moved your post here to keep the discussion in the same place.

If you read through you’ll see there aren’t many problems, just keep an eye out for tipping, pay at the pump, car rental and take the local currency out at ATMs rather than converting it

Just arrived back from a week in Vegas…

Used my Monzo card all over without a single issue. Rates came up straight away and transactions appeared as they do here.

Enjoy using it. Although I didn’t use a cash machine.

Spent a week in Florida, used my Monzo card for everything. Got accepted everywhere with no issues. Even in the smallest town store in the middle of nowhere.
And they all loved the colour of the card :slightly_smiling_face:
The app worked perfectly

I’m heading to the US in October and hiring a car - planning on driving a fair bit so will need to fill up with petrol several times.

I’m a Costco member in the UK and was hoping to use their gas stations whilst I’m there - I have two questions really:

Has anyone used their Monzo CA card at Costco gas stations in the US? Do they request a zip code? If so - will they accept a dummy zip code or numbers from UK postcode followed by 0s etc?

It looks like Costco put a $100 pre-authorisation when using a debit card - any ideas how long this takes to drop off? If not, would Monzo customer operations team be able to free up the funds for me with the caveat that the pre-auth may actually settle and the money be credited?

Separate from the Costco question, is there any specific advice on using pay at pump in the US…? I may have to use other companies’ gas stations so would appreciate any general advice.

The $100 authorisation you won’t actually see, they’ll deduct whatever you have taken up to $100 (this was my experience at another gas station in the States).

Costco does not support MasterCard, so I’m not sure if you can use Monzo in the UK or the US at Costco locations.

Was this with Monzo? I thought one of the benefits of Monzo is that it shows all transactions, pending (like authorisations) or otherwise… I definitely see the authorisations in the UK.

You’re correct that Costco don’t support MasterCard credit, but they definitely accept MasterCard debit here in the UK - I should expect it’s the same in the US but I will check. One thing that confused me is the MasterCard symbol isn’t present at UK Costco checkouts/petrol pumps - this led me to believe it wouldn’t work, but I was informed that this is because the vast majority of MasterCard cards in the UK are credit, so it’s not shown to avoid confusion.

To be fair, I really don’t remember. The last time I attempted to use MasterCard at Costco they refused the payment. What you’ve said has encouraged me to be a bit more forceful in letting them know it is a debit not a credit card! Thanks!

From the costco US T&Cs:

Costco accepts all Visa cards, as well as cash, checks, debit/ATM, EBT and Costco Cash Cards. Photo identification and approval by a supervisor or manager may be required. A valid government-issued photo ID is required if you plan to pay by check. Cash, checks and EBT are not accepted at Costco.com, Costco Gas Stations or Costco Car Washes.

I used my Monzo card at Costco in the UK about two weeks ago, no issue

Sounds like I should be fine then - thank you

I’m not sure, I’ll be interested to see. I don’t know if by ā€˜debit/ATM’ they mean Mastercard Debit, or if they only mean US regional debit networks (and maybe Interac through the NYCE mutual acceptance agreement)… do report back!

Hey. Going to New York in October, we pay for our hotel on arrival (booking.com) and was going to change my card details from my credit to Monzo to avoid paying extra conversion fees.

If I put the money on my Monzo before flying out will I have any issues paying for the hotel when I get there using Monzo? My friend says we might have trouble?

Thanks!

Did they give any more details? I don’t think you’d have any problem

You’ll be fine.

Only thing I had a problem using in NYC last year was the MTA ticket machines… but I believe that might be resolved now?

Something to do with authorising the payment when we get there? He highlighted this to me?

That section refers to how monzo displays the name and location of where you spend your money in the app so won’t affect your hotel :slightly_smiling_face:

You shouldn’t have a problem with authorisations as long as you’ve got enough money in your Monzo account to cover whatever the hotel requests from Monzo

That said, there’s loads of smart people here who can correct me if I’m wrong. It’s probably also worth asking monzo directly in the in-app chat :+1:

The only issue I might envisage is the pre-authorisation of any expenses on top of the accommodation price. It’s not unusual for them to pre-authorise $50-100 extra per night of your stay. Using Monzo this amount will be locked until it clears but you don’t really notice it with a credit card with a significant limit. I once stayed in a higher end hotel where they pre-auth’d $250 per night but that is exceptional.

When I was in the US last year my prepaid Asda currency card (Mastercard) worked OK at Costco, so I’ll definitely be interested to see if Monzo works.
