🇬🇷 Monzo in Greece [Discussion]

Same I was in Athens a week ago and my card worked fine at Eurobank ATMs while decling DCC.

So far no problems for my wife or I in Zante (still here), haven’t tried to withdraw cash. Only weird thing is my wife’s card has been used for contactless and then the pin is asked for?

Seems odd, but worth mentioning! Paid for meals and car hire😊

not weird, just expected behaviour in certain countries.

Too used to contactless in Blighty

In Greece this is expected for payments larger than £30 (or is it €30, not sure) and every few payments for safety reasons.

In France they do the same only there you need to insert the card and enter its pin, which is even more inconvenient.

I have seen contactless cards accepted in a petrol station in Essex for transactions above £30 but it was as contactless and signature not contactless and PIN!

in Netherlands and US at a few locations I also saw chip and dip, where you insert a card and pull it out but do not use PIN.

Last year with the prepaid card the lady at the local supermarket took my card & placed on for contactless when it was €80 - she then said “pin”. I’d never done this before as like you I’m used to UK £30 limit.

Yes, this is how it’s usually done in Greece, especially in the the big Supemarket chains like AB. For Apple Pay there is no limit.

My boyfriend and I just got back from a week in Rhodes where we both used our Monzo for several purchases and a handful of cash withdrawals. No problems at all using it, most places didn’t even ask if we wanted to pay in £s, just went straight in and charged us in €s, the only place we were given the option was at the hotel reception, which wasn’t a surprise. ATMs did try and force DCC on us, but as with anywhere else if you say no enough times it lets you use your card rate.

Card acceptance was better than I thought it would be, the only time we weren’t able to use it was in a few bars where they had a €10 minimum spend on cards and no contactless facilities. Overall very happy with Monzo on this trip, I have never had issues with it abroad before but I was a little concerned about Greece and card acceptance, although I needn’t have worried!

Most merchandisers in Greece are obligated by law to accept cards.

Off to Mykonos tomorrow, will report back :airplane:️ don’t expect any problems tbh

Hi I’m travelling to Pefkos in Rhodes tomorrow can anyone advise if monzo card here

My friend went to Pefkos two years ago and her experience was that they do take card at restaurants, bars etc but they much prefer cash. There are ATMs but sometimes they’re not working or have run out of cash, so make sure you check around

Monzo works everywhere in Greece. POSs are mandatory but sometimes merchands insist on cash. In case you need to use an ATM, look for one of the four big banks (Alpha, Eurobank, Piraeus and NBG), as they don’t charge fees. They’re almost everywhere.

Thank you Eve

My experience in Greece is that card acceptance is getting better & most places will take. The only 2 issues I have had is ATMs trying to use their rate of currency conversion as well as POS doing the same. Last year in Greece I had 1 POS that did not give an option to stop DCC - therefore had to use a € card.

Hi,

just to let you know that at least 2 banks (National Bank of Greece and Piraeus Bank) are charging 2 and 3 euros fees if you choose “no conversion”. Alpha Bank is still free however.

This happened on 23-25 July, Jante.

Hi,

Hope you don’t mind but I’ve moved your post here with the rest of the feedback on Greece. Just to keep it easy to find for new users

On another note. Hope you enjoyed your trip!
