Halifax shamelessly ripping off Monzo

No worries! Where does it say the images were leaked? They will have been submitted by the agency I expect. Halifax were clearly fine with it being sent in if that is indeed the case, and should have really stopped it happening. Knowing branding agencies, it’s clearly just a mockup to sell in the design to the client (halifax), but then they really shouldn’t have re-coloured Monzo’s app instead of Halifax’s going any further on than getting it approved.

I’ve worked in a few design agencies and these things get amended all the way down to the wire, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still being changed now

Yeah this is probably most likely.

So as the title of this topic states “Halifax shamesllessy ripping off Monzo” might be a bit harsh as it hasn’t been officially announced yet. As far as I can see, it is Rufus Leonard who have done this.

It has been picked up by the Financial Times. They also reached out to Halifax…

Looks like the Rufus Leonard LinkedIn page has deleted a post that also had the image Tom has tweeted. (I didn’t get a screen grab earlier :disappointed:). https://www.linkedin.com/company/rufus-leonard/

This is their Creative Director endorsing the design week post though https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlo-d-alanno-0341479/detail/recent-activity/

Things like these can be seen in 3 ways:

  1. Its an honest mistake…
  2. Its a flagrant copy of Monzo’s style.
  3. Lazy design and marketing
I’m more inclined to think its a mix of two and 3

It’s very much not a redesign of their app, it’s just the design agency showing what their new branding could look like in a banks app. It’s just a bit shit using Monzo (a competitor) as the template for this instead of a random mockup or their own app.

So I wouldn’t say it’s a copy, or a mistake, just a bit of laziness and a lack of thought.

  1. A rushed design proposal to meet the deadline for tender*

*Which they have won and are bragging about while refining it, hence the deleted posts that @danbeddows found

Then lost following the backlash :sweat_smile:

Hahaha yeah. It’s not good however you look at it

I take comfort in the fact that a lot of Monzo’s direct competition have just spent a huge amount of time and money in the many many meetings, discussions, conference calls, 3rd parties and design activities that took place… Ultimately to copy (IMHO) the best example on the market.

if that doesn’t scream ‘inefficient’… what does.

Strong opinion from someone in the comments for that article :open_mouth:

As more media outlets catch on it will be interesting to see what (if anything) unfolds :eyes:

Brutal.

Have they removed the card pic from the article? Or was it never there?

They’ve also copied the freeze button

Hah, looks like they’ve removed the images from the article now

Really lazy work from the marketing agency there.

But… Can’t see how Halifax are at fault here. There’s almost no way the people who signed off on this (which, apparently didn’t happen anyway, despite people seemingly wanting to roast Halifax alive for it), wouldn’t have known who Natalie from Monzo was (the name on the card), and probably wouldn’t have known anything about the BIN.

This whole thing is…

“Marketing agency produce a lazy mock up”… Internet forum gets the knives out…

Also, FYI, that image of the card (with Natalies name on), has been used by Monzo loads in the past, and appears on other sites - Wikipedia is one of them, but to say “they ripped it from Wikipedia” isn’t correct.
