✅ Family accounts / Accounts for children / under-16s

Aparently I was voting on an older quieter thread.

Adding a vote and a bump to this. Would be infinitely better than having to Xfer money to a Starling account, and apply it to my daughters card.

If it’s regular pocket money then you can get that all automated. I have a transfer which moves the money into starling and then on Sunday the kite account picks up the pocket money. I don’t have to lift a finger.

Monzo and starling allow for weekly standing orders and they will transfer over a weekend as well, unlike some banks.

Appreciate it maybe not what you’re after but thought I would mention it.

I just hate having to have a redundant account open with Starling for sole purpose of using their “Kite” account stuff, which is essentially just a pot with a card.

Its an unneccessary pain in my side. Monzo already have a “junior” account for under 18s, I am just hoping they bring the age cap down further. A full account also means friends/family can contribute to her savings in a ‘cleaner’ way than sending me the money, and I would be able to pay her salary/dividends from my company so that she can contribute to her own pension/ISA too !

The Monzo junior account is 16 to 17 year olds where as Starling goes much younger. I think obviously assumed the idea would be favourable with those who have their main account with Starling.

It’s also now free, so leaving an account open with them it’s no biggie.

There are other banks which offer individual accounts for children, with their own cards and don’t require you to hold an adult account just to have the child one.

I really wish Monzo would do this we currently have our children with their own Starling account but we prefer Monzo.

This is VERY exciting. Will finally be able to get my nieces in on the action. Wondering what they are going to do about pricing or whether a child membership will be included with plus/premium.

Current accounts you’ll have many transactions which will meet the provider fees each time you use the card. Kids account will have far fewer transactions so are a loss leader rather than something that is profitable on its own.

Having a kids account that I can see the transactions and have say the grandparents pay into for birthdays etc and pocket money would be awesome. hopefully it will be free. If I have to pay for it then ill probably just keep the pots going instead and they can wait until they are 16.

Just curious as to why you wouldn’t pay for a feature you clearly want?

Similar from GoHenry is £3.99 a month.

We’d all like everything to be free, huh.

Child accounts are coming.

What’s not known is when, how much they will cost (if anything), if they will be only via Plus/Premium, available with Joint accounts, etc.

No age I guess… I have 3 young children I’m putting money aside for. I’d like savings accounts in their name so that I’m not paying tax on the interest at the rate I pay it.

Hi,

I would like to share some feedback on this. The lack of debit cards for children (under 16) has started to be a real issue for our family now. We have 11 year old daughter who is going to secondary school next September and she will need a banking card. Our second child will need a card within next three years.

Unfortunately if Monzo won’t have debit cards for children before or around September 2024 we will most likely start moving our current accounts to Starling Bank. That is a painful operation to do but it really won’t make sense for us to stick with Monzo anymore.

Kind regards

Why do you need to move bank for your kids to have a card?

You might need to open an account but you don’t need to use it.

Some people think you can only ever have one bank account at a time allowed.

As you say it’s literally a few minutes to create a Starling account, and tap on Spaces > tap Kite Space

You really don’t need to do that. The feature set of Monzo is (arguably) well above offerings from other banks. I’ve tried all of the kids offerings throughout the years - except Starling. At the mo, we have a full-on Monzo 16-17 yo account for the 16 yo and the 13 yo is using a combination of a Monzo Virtual Card with Apple Pay on their iPhone and a physical Algbra card (in my name) for emergencies.

Monzo child accounts are coming though. Just unknown when.
