Emma Feedback Thread / Q&A

Facebook??? seriously??? I don’t want FB anywhere near my transactions. Even if this is 2 factor authentication. I never signed up to spotify specifically because when I was wondering it the only way was through facebook. So using Deezer instead.

Sorry but facebook?.. i m out!

I set up Emma, I don’t like it (not wanting a debate, it’s personal preference - mainly what I don’t like is that it’s asking me to enter my American Express credentials in to a third party service provider’s site - which is a huge security no-no in my book. Credentials should only go to the manager of those credentials; like Emma does for Monzo).

Now, how do I revoke Emma’s API access for Monzo, since I’m going to uninstall it? I can’t see any ‘revoke API access’ option in the Monzo app. Am I missing something obvious? @HughWells,maybe?

I just asked elsewhere - you need to contact monzo to do this.

Thanks! I’ll in-app chat them.

Yeah, chat to COps, if you can, catch last night’s open office… They talk about this eventually being something we can do, but for the current time being it’s a manual chat with them…

Same here but we can hope for the future, Would be nice to have that nice spending breakdown that amex don’t offer, that’s what I want.

Scratch that read further down the thread

I was at the open office, but I didn’t pick up on this… oops! Must have been that delicious curry distracting me.

It turns out they do support it, if you’re comfortable giving your credentials to a third party. They don’t support it in a nice direct API way like they do Monzo.

Ouch, guess we will have to wait for a lovely API.
Does PSD2 / Open Banking changes apply to Amex? As I guess they aren’t a bank… :face_with_monocle:

All sorted! The famous @simonb himself answered my chat (though later messages got handed to another COp, also great, only downside is they call me by Alex instead of knowing to call me my nickname, Allie - nice personal touch, Simon! You rock!).

I wish I was at the open office yesterday to meet you, alas I work those hours.

Simon is a beautiful soul :orange_heart:

He really is! Honestly, I had some issues (non-tech) awhile ago and both @simonb and @HughWells were so amazing! Awesome, awesome people are the foundation of what makes Monzo a great experience! Thank you as well @BethS

In fairness to Emma and its third party account data provider Truelayer, Truelayer is authorised as an Account Information Service Provider (“AISP”) and as a Payment Initiation Service Provider (“PISP“) by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK (License Number: 793171). TrueLayer is also working with financial institutions across the UK to provide easy access to the OpenBanking platform. Their APIs are Open Banking compliant.

That being said, I really don’t like how punctuation is presented in the app. The Uk with a little k. The First Direct 1St Account. A little bug-bearer as a teacher in a professional app. Also my main legacy bank account with RBS/Child’s doesn’t work (but that might be more down to RBS not being fully Open Banking compliant). A regular saver appears as a current account. Not all my banks are available etc.

A good start at implementing Open Banking, but needs a lot of work.

I’ve been using it for a week but just don’t see it adding much value over what Monzo already does.

I’ve always been interested in seeing all my accounts in 1 place as I don’t bank with just 1 bank and I use 2 current accounts week in week out (wage and bills in and out of 1 account and spends out of Monzo). If it was for just Monzo, I agree it would be pretty useless.

I fully agree with you! But compare their Terms:

TrueLayer will then automatically download transactional information relating to your Personal Account(s) and continue to do so at certain times until you withdraw your consent for it to do so. TrueLayer will only provide us with a ‘screen grab’ of your Personal Account transaction information and will not initiate any payments from your Personal Account(s).

4.2 You grant to us and TrueLayer a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use the information in your Personal Account(s)

with those of a competitor I’m using (I’m not using their automated aggregator functions, instead uploading CSVs manually, because this is just ludicrous):

For all purposes hereof, You hereby grant Wave and Yodlee a limited power of attorney, and You hereby appoint Wave and Yodlee as Your true and lawful attorney-in-fact and agent, with full power of substitution and resubstitution, for You and in Your name, place and stead, in any and all capacities, to access third party Internet sites, servers or documents, retrieve information, and use Your information, all as described above, with the full power and authority to do and perform each and every act and thing requisite and necessary to be done in connection with such activities, as fully to all intents and purposes as You might or could do in person, only as required to provide you the Service

Wow. Those are awful. I want to make it clear when I say credentials to a third party, the two parties are myself and American Express.

TrueLayer or Emma directly - either one is a third party in this case. Only myself and Amex should know my Amex credentials.

But yes, your example is much worse. I wonder if they do that as a social experiment to see how bad of terms people will sign. It reminds me of the first born child clause…

Lucky, I’ve tried this morning and the person I spoke to doesn’t appear to know what EMMA is. Still waiting for a reply after explaining.

I just had the same, also waiting

Surprising, given the open office! Now, the way it was done revokes all API access, including the Monzo app itself. Be sure you uninstall the Emma app before signing back into Monzo, or Emma might take the API link instead… and then you’ll be like me and have to bother @simonb to do it again!

Thanks for the tip. EMMA gone!
